MTV’s Booking People Will Not Let You Forget About Jennifer Lopez

Sep 10th, 2009 // 10 Comments

In addition to letting slip that Jay-Z and Alicia Keys would grace this year’s Video Music Awards with a performance of their collaboration “Empire State of Mind,” MTV has announced more additions to its roster of presenters for Sunday night’s broadcast; among them are Canadian cutie Justin Bieber, Shakira, Pete Wentz, Gabe Saporta, Jack Black, and… Jennifer Lopez. Jennifer Lopez, really? I guess she still counts as a music-related celebrity—and who knows, maybe she’s prepping for a very belated deluxe reissue of the floptastic Brave! The night’s roster of performers and presenters after the jump.

Performers (main stage):
Janet Jackson (tribute to Michael Jackson)
Jay-Z feat. Alicia Keys
Lady GaGa
Green Day
Taylor Swift

Performers (side stage with Wale and the UCB):
Kid Cudi
All-American Rejects

Nelly Furtado
Robert Pattinson
Kristen Stewart
Taylor Lautner
Chace Crawford
Leighton Meester
Miranda Cosgrove

Jack Black
50 Cent
Andy Samberg
Jimmy Fallon
Kristin Cavallari
Pete Wentz

… and a “special appearance” by Eminem, which was no doubt written into the contract for Marshall’s Bruno-promoting stunt at the network’s Movie Awards back in May.

  1. I can only imagine how sick Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are of pimping themselves on an MTV awards show, after the Movie Awards in June where they were on-camera (and seemingly uncomfortable) every 20 seconds.

  2. So, who do we think is gonna close the show? Jay and Alicia? I feel like in the last year or so, MTV and its affiliated networks have been pushing Muse sorta hard… Can’t be Pink. Maybe Lady B? I just don’t want some big Green Day blowout to end the show.

For a second i thought Wale was gonna perform with the improvisers from NYC, but I guess the UCB is his Crew. Sigh.

  3. That Jennifer Lopez album cover looks oh-so-scarily like the movie poster for “Alien Vs. Predator”. I’m not kidding…

  4. @drinkypuss: They’re a go-go band from DC.

  5. @Maura: I may not love go-go, but that does make the show more interesting than your garden variety rap crew. I mean, how excited are you for 3Oh!3 and a go-go band!!!!

  6. @drinkypuss: hahahaha.

    Meanwhile, Solange just got added:
@solangeknowles: Siked to be performing a little snippet of kings of leon w house man @wale at the VMAS…

  7. How many more years must “Day N Nite” be a hit before Cudi can take the main stage?

  8. @Maura: Yes, I love the possibility of Solange getting some publicity! (As a long-time lurker, I have to gush and say thank you Maura, you’re the one who made me see the brilliance of her last record! “I Decided Pt. 2″ is my lovely go-to pick-me-up track now.)

As a child whose first dance record was Janet Jackson in the late eighties, I look forward to seeing what she can pull out, despite my disappointment with her output over the years. I’ve always admired her familial independence, unlike perhaps Jermaine, who is just aping at this point (even if I do also have fond memories of his afro’d solo efforts as well).

I have no respect for a network that continues to try to give Jimmy Fallon legitimacy though.

  9. So does that mean that Solange will be covering “Use Somebody” a la paramore?

  10. Being signed is not always the right way. I mean kinda like what you mentioned in the other blog. Da Youngfellaz are just right with their approach to good music good hip hop and keep it so fun to listen to.
