Three Songs To Take You Through The End Of Your Day

Sep 10th, 2009 // 8 Comments

It’s been a long time since I did a post that just recommended a bunch of songs, no? Well, three wonderful slices of glossy, bouncy pop await you after the jump.

Australia’s inadvertent alt-pop poster girl Natalie Imbruglia’s comeback single “Want,” which I’ve praised in this space before but which now has a narcissism-of-the-Webcam-era-probing video:

And Kanye West protege Mr. Hudson’s “White Lies,” which friend-of-Idolator Michaela Drapes tipped me off to by saying, “It should be a Robbie Williams song. I was worried that his new one was so dated … but if there’s still stuff like this on the UK charts, he’s golden. Yay!”

And finally, here’s Annie’s “Songs Remind Me Of You,” which will be the lead single from the reworked version of her long-delayed album Don’t Stop. It’s produced by the always-reliable studio mastermind Richard X, and it absolutely slays. (Michaela also let me know about this video.)

  1. Natalie, are we serious? Sexy girl, sexy yet monotonous video.

  2. Fun fact: Annie, in that video, is wearing the same outfit I saw on M.I.A. at Outside Lands. Not sure what to make of my fun fact.

  3. “Songs Remind Me of You” alone (well, that and the discarded “Sweet”) made Don’t Stop (the original version, even!) one of my favorite albums of last year. Here’s hoping the 2009 re-work is EVEN BETTER.

  4. @NunyaB: I was just thinking that same thing when I saw this post up. The Island Records version of the album is so so so good, so consistently top quality, that it makes me lust for what sort of cool updates she might have applied for the Smalltown Supersound version. The brilliant “ding-a-ding-a-ding-a-ding-ding-ding” bit from “I Know UR Girlfriend Hates Me” has been my ringtone for ages now.

“Want” sounds like it should be sung by Nelly Furtado. I mean, I’m glad Natalie is back and working it (she should’ve never had such a Greatest Hits-induced hiatus to begin with), but when she said her new album would be more “disco” I was expecting something different. It’s quite good though, even if the video is plodding.

  5. To quote a great philosopher, that Natalie Imbruglia song really is so 2000 and late.

  6. Natalie Imbruglia singing songs maybe-once-designed for Kylie Minogue in their smokey electric haze?! Where do I sign?

Also: Holy shit that Mr Hudson song is great. Antiseptic longing: my favorite kind.

  7. Didn’t Natalie Imbruglia date David Schwimmer?

  8. That Annie song is 100% pure sex.
