Is This Britney Spears’ Heavily Auto-Tuned Demo Of “Telephone”?

We all know that Lady Gaga originally wrote “Telephone” for Britney Spears, leaving pop enthusiasts to wonder how Britney’s version of the track would have sounded, and whether she, too, would wear an origami telephone hat while poisoning an entire diner in the song’s video. (We’re betting… no.)

A recording of “Telephone” surfaced over the weekend rumored to be Britney’s demo version—but is it her or an imposter? Listen below, grain of salt, etc.

It does sound like Britney’s vocals (when it doesn’t sound like a generic female robot Auto-Tuned within an inch of her life) but Brit’s main fan site World of Britney claims that’s it’s not her on the track. “There was almost no Auto Tune in the actual song,” WOB tweeted over the weekend. “It was raw vocals and that isnt the song. Those of you who have ears can hear its not B.”

Even if this is Britney’s recorded version of the song, it’s still a demo, which means we can’t really judge the quality. But we’re pretty sure if Brit had released this song, it would still have been a giant hit. (Then again, the other technology-as-a-means-for-communication tracks in the Britney Spears songbook, “E-mail My Heart” and “Phonography,” weren’t even released as singles, so who knows.)

Until word comes from Team Britney, jury’s still out. So let’s all enjoy listening to Lady Gaga’s demo of her own song, sans Beyoncé. (Our main thought? Needs more Beyoncé.)
