Before they teamed up for Precious, director Lee Daniels produced little-seen 2008 Mariah Carey flick Tennessee. The film was finally released on DVD earlier this year, and has posted Mariah’s excellent cover of Kris Kristofferson’s “Help Me Make It Through The Night”—which was apparently recorded for the Tennessee soundtrack but never made it in. Back in March when the Angels Advocate remix album was shelved, we lamented that Mariah needs to figure out what type of artist she wants to be. An urban diva with a hip hop edge? A pop balladeer?

And upon hearing Mimi’s version of “Help Me Make It Through The Night”—which has been covered by Jerry Lee Lewis, Sammi Smith, Gladys Knight & The Pips and Johnny Cash with wife June Carter—we have to say this confirms that her strengths do seem to fall into the tender balladeer category.

It truly is a beautiful, haunting song, and Mariah gives it just the right amount of wistful vocal power here. A full album of this, please.

  1. Shea Butter

I must a agree smooth power ballads are Mariahs strength and will always be, although I love that she changes it up a bit.

But I must say I love her cover of this song. I love the raw vocals over the guitar.

  2. The song is decent but it really doesn’t stand out to me to be honest. I would say she belongs in the pop ballad-er category.

She really has been having an identity crisis with her music lately , I felt that The Emancipation of Mimi was a terrific fusion of Pop and R&B her last two albums have either steered strongly into the pop range with Touch My Body or into the Hip-Hop and R&B with Obsessed and alot of weird sounds mixed in inbetween.

I’m not sure why she decided to switch directions after TEOM but it hasn’t worked out very well. Bring Mimi back if that’s what it takes!

  3. Good to see her coming out with some new music!

  4. it makes me think like hard about life

  5. this chick can sing any genre of music…she is the queen of billboard hits…no end in sight for MIMI…rock it girl.

  6. Love her voice. I’ve always loved her voice. I’ve heard that people don’t like her; well, I personally do not know her to say that, and I wouldn’t want to place myself in any glass house as other feel so boldly to do so. But I love her voice. From the 1990 to now, her voice has always stood out, in any form it may be in, it has always stood apart and above, and I know that isn’t anything special to testify to, but while there are great voices that still do exist, we should recognize them. Plus I’m a bit of a country boy, and while we could talk about what her voice was or had been, or even could of been if properly nurtured –it is what it is, and it is still amazing.
