Since there’s no way to compete with Stars Wars reenactments like Adidas has brilliantly done, Converse is going the more sentimental route to promote their brand. The hipster-adored brand of sneaks brought together three eclectic acts—Kid Cudi, Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast and Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend—to record one track that will be released this July. In anticipation of the single, each artist shot a short film detailing their life and influences. Check out Kid Cudi’s short below, in which he goes back to his hometown and talks about his writing process.

“I wrote my first rap sitting right here,” Cudi says on the stoop of his boyhood home.”I remember bussing tables, pouring people’s water… but then humming raps in my head, in my own world.” To be honest, this short is in fact, too short to really reveal anything significant about Cudi’s past or the method to his madness. But he’s wearing Converse sneakers! And that’s all that matters, apparently.

In less uplifting Kid Cudi news, he is still awaiting arriagnment after getting arrested for violently breaking down a door and being caught with something  called “liquid cocaine.” Now that would have made an extremely interesting short film. Why didn’t Converse just film a dramatization of Cudi’s wild night?
