Now we know one of the reasons why Eminem’s appearance Friday on the Late Show With David Letterman had to be pre-taped—the Recovery rapper was across the country in Los Angeles that evening presenting his friend and mentor Dr. Dre with ASCAP’s Founders Award at the 23rd Annual Rhythm And Soul Music Awards. “It would’ve been a lot easier for Dre to dismiss me like most people did,” Em said to the crowd. “But he didn’t. He stepped up to the challenge because he saw something in me, and for that, Dre, I’m forever grateful, man.” Watch after the jump.

Eminem and Dre shared a hug before posing for some photos, and then the doc gave his acceptance speech.

“First I want to start by saying I am living an incredible life,” a humble-sounding Dre said. “I mean being able to make a living doing what I love, it’s incredible—and to have so many people enjoy it for so many years, man I can’t even explain to you how good that feels.”

Last week Dr. Dre’s collaboration with Jay-Z, “Under Pressure,” leaked. The rap and Beats By Dre headphone mogul also surprised the graduates at L.A.’s Culver City High School by showing up with Timbaland to crash their year-end ceremony.

With all this flurry of activity, could Andre Young’s delayed Detox album be that far off?
