Katy Perry Blasts Her Ex In New Track “Circle The Drain”

Aug 10th, 2010 // 24 Comments

If you want Katy Perry looking sweet and lovely, check out her just-dropped “Teenage Dream” video. If you want your pop star with a bit more bite, though, her angry woman-scorned track “Circle the Drain” also surfaced today, and it’s a not-so-subtle jab at her ex Travie McCoy. Let’s just say Travie should want to be a billionaire so he can afford damage control after hearing his reputation being smacked around in this song. Listen below.

Katy Perry – “Circle The Drain”

01 Circle the Drain by TPBSecretLeaks

“Thought I was the exception / I could rewrite your addiction / You could have been the greatest / But you’d rather get wasted,” Katy snaps in this Tricky Stewart-produced takedown track. “You fall asleep during foreplay/ ‘Cause the pills you take are more your forté / I’m not sticking around to watch you go down / Wanna be your lover / Not your fucking mother.”

Oh, it gets angrier from there, folks: “You’ve become what you despised / A stereotype / You think you’re so rock ‘n’ roll / But you’re really just a joke / Had the world in the palm of your hands / But you fuckin’ choked.”

Ouch… talk about airing your dirty laundry. We’re not so sure how we feel about an entire song dedicated to criticizing somebody who had an addiction (Travie has been addicted to pharmaceuticals since he was a teenager), even if he was a shitty boyfriend. As for the song itself, it feels like a modern day Heart or Pat Benatar tune, and we have a feeling this will soon be the go-to angry-ex-girlfriend song to replace “You Oughta Know” for the 21st century.

Do you think this song is way harsh, particularly since it’s slamming another public figure in the music scene? Or does Katy deserve a pat on the back for writing a pop song with some real-life emotion?

It’s definitely way too harsh. It’s one thing to talk about a relationship gone wrong in a song, but it’s another thing to bash someone over something as painful as an addiction. Not only is it hitting below the belt, it’s kicking someone when they’re not. This is very mean spirited of Katy.

I love it! I like that Katy describes her life and emotions through her songs!
And Russell is WAY better than her ex!

  3. gwen

    Who cares about her ex????
If he made her feel that way, she is free to express her feelings to her fans!

  4. lola

I wish she wrote songs ONLY for Russell!! I love him! And I think that he won’t like that Katy still writes songs about her ex!
From the moment that Russell started dating Katy he respects her…he stopped tweeting to his ex girlfriends like he used to do, and he even stopped tweeting to his fans! :( That shows that he respects Katy, but Katy doesn’t do the same! :(

  5. Lking

I’m not a famous musical artist, so don’t know that I could write a song about a bad relationship–seems she could have gotten out before she got so angry. Guess even the Katy Perry’s of this world have little sense when it comes to men.

  6. Libby

Isn’t the point of music to express feelings?? I think it’s awesome! She doesn’t hold back, that’s why I like her!

  7. Kimmi

    Love it! Raw and real!!

  8. Me

It may be pretty harsh, but it might be just what whoever she wrote this song for needs. You can’t help someone who doesn’t want to help themselves so sometimes you have to tell or show someone exactly how they’re screwing up to get them to change.

  9. Its not harsh one bit, I out of many girls have gone through the same thing! These boys drag you down in life while you watch! I just recently broke up with my boy, then this song came out. Me being a Katy Perry fan I hasn’t stopped listening since! It helps, makes you feel your on top of the whole problem! My life has only changed for the best! Thank you Katy for letting us girls know we are not the only ones trying to be someones savior, that doesn’t want to be saved!!!!

I DON’T THINK IT MATTERS IF SOMEONE TALKS ABOUT SOMEONES ADDICTION. HE DID IT TO HIMSELF. PLUS HIS MOTHER ESTABLISHED THAT ADDICTION TO HIM. IF YOU SEE HIS MOTHER SHE LOOKS LIKE A JUNKY. THE GUY DESTROYED HIMSELF, I’M SURE HIS MOTHER DIDN’T CARE ONE BIT, WHY SHOULD KATY PERRY? SHE’S RIGHT. LOL WHO THE HECK WANTS TO BE WITH A MAN WITH AN ADDICTION, WHO KNOWS HOW HE MIGHT TURN OUT. HE CHOKED! LIKE HIS CUPID chokeHOLD SONG. LOL AND AS A WOMAN WITH NEEDS WHO WANTS A MAN WHO PASSES OUT DURING FOREPLAY…FORGET IT..I’M GLAD KATY PERRY CAME OUT WITH THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STORY BECAUSE EVERYONE WAS FEELING BAD FOR HIM. HE WAS PREPARED TO DROP “FORGETTING KATY PERRY” MIXTAPE , ALL ABOUT HER. EVERYONE WAS FEELING BAD FOR HIM BECAUSE HE DESCRIBED THE BREAK UP LIKE “FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL”. SEE WHY YOU SHOULD BELIEVE THERE IS ALWAYS 3 SIDES TO THE STORY. BOTH SIDES AND THE TRUTH. I ALSO ENJOYED THAT TRICKY STEWART, THE DREAM’S PRODUCER AND FRIEND PRODUCED THIS SONG. I GIVE PROPS TO KATY ON THIS ONE. SHE DID GOOD! BRING ON THE COW MAN, I MEAN THE BEEF…LOL

He choked, Tyan? Umm, Travie has one of he biggest smash hits of the summer song called Billionaire, which happens to be in the top ten on the Billboard charts right now. Former addict or not, never, ever underestimate or count someone out in life. You just might end up eating your swords someday. Remember, this song is coming from a girl who is currently engaged to a former heroin addict. So I wouldn’t be up on some high horse if I were her. A little humility goes a long way in life.

  12. Tyan

Tiffany I agree w/ u but Katy has all right to mention it. She’s a lousy singer but she sang the truth. I’m sorry but I lived thru the experience of having a man with an addiction and its not fun. I know Russell Brand was an ex heroine addict she should be now more aware of that dude who was addicted to one of the mothers of drugs, heroine. I just think its fine if she wants to talk about his addiction. Like I said above his mother established that addiction on him so Katy doesn’t want to be his mother and be an enabler. Also I ment he “choked” like his cupid chokehold song bc the word choke is named like that not bc he has ONE song that’s in the top ten. Nonetheless, his album did wind up CHOKING with just 15,000 copies sold his first week, one song doesn’t mean anything. I on the other hand did enjoy his album. Either way, I think Katy has to speak out bc in many of his songs and naming that mixtape “forgettin katy perry” sounds like he’s trying to throw her name in the mud. She dissed him really bad. Like I mentioned above if you read it clearly, he made himself out to be the “good guy” when little did we know he wasn’t even being the “Mccoy” man he claimed to be. At th end we really don’t know how they may end up, I just like things to be fair and Katy making this song is fair enough to me, if not then he needs to drop the “forgettin katy perry” mixtape so we can see what’s going on, and as a fan of him I want to hear it.

Btw, he’s a bit hypocritical making the “Billionaire” song mentioning he’ll help his loved ones when he has his mother living in a small run down apartment in Georgia. SMH
People like to think to highly of celebrities at times and don’t even know the real deal SMH

  13. Sarah

She isn’t making fun of addiction. She wouldn’t do that when her fiance went through something just as painful. She is annoyed with the fact that he said he was going to change and he didn’t, she tried to change him and what she is saying in this song is that you can’t change a person who isn’t willing to change. She loved him that’s why she tried to help. Russell Brand was a herion addict and a sex addict who changed himself so he could be comitted to someone. Travie Mccoy isn’t willing to change and that is what she is annoyed with not the fact that he has an addiction alone.

  14. Tiffany

    Sarah,

It’s not always what a person says in a song, it’s how a person say’s it.I think Katy was a little harsh and a person only releases something that scathing when they want to hurt someone. Katy wanted to hurt Travie with that song. Simple as that. Furthermore, an addict will never change for someone else. No matter how much they may love them, and I have no doubt that Travis loved Katy very much. An addict has to want to change for himself first. That is the only way rehab will ever work. Sometimes you might even have to lose something very dear to you before you realize just how serious your problem is. In Travie’s case, it may very well have taken losing Katy to get him to wake up and get help. The good thing is that he did eventually get help and he is clean now and he seems to be doing very well, thank God. So I wish Travie all the best in life.

  15. Nelly

Like someone up there said, there’s always three sides of a story-both sides and the truth. Here’s Travie’s side of the story: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfQ7BEJB2Vk

  16. Melissa

Something I am not understanding, though. Katy and Travie broke up around Xmas ’08. She went back to Travie around Apr/May ’09.Travie was clean at that time because he had just finished rehab, but then the next thing you know, she breaks up with him again in June and ends up with Russell. They get quickly engaged a couple of months later. What gives? It makes you wonder if she had something going on with Russell while she was with Travis. It seems like Katy is using Travie’s past drug abuse as a ruse to cover up the fact that she broke up with Travie to be with Russell. Its the oldest trick in the book. Make the other person look like the bad guy while you act all sweet and innocent. Katy is full of it and she wrote this song to make Travie look bad. That is all kinds of wrong on so many levels. Not very surprising, though. I’ve always sensed that beneath that sweet smile and those pretty eyes, that Katy is a cold and calculating person and I think she used Travie. Her recent actions have just proved that to me.

  17. Soul

I think the song sucks…and so does she. Who cares what she says…she probably didn’t even write it herself…Did you ever think of that?

  18. kitty purry

this song is freaking amazing. im addicted to it (ironic, i know). its a really good song. shes allowed to be pissed off about someone who treated her badly, so let her. there are how many people out there who write songs about their exes and totally bash them worse than this. and guess what? if he treated her badly, he probably deserves this song, so shut up.

  19. Melissa

    u stfu

  20. Val

I don’t think Travie “treated her badly.” He was always bigging Katy up in interviews and basically put her on a pedastal. Having an addiction is not treating Katy bad. The guy had a problem. If anything, he treated himself bad. He was the one addicted to the pills. I’m sorry, but its not right to slam someone over an addiction in a song. Its low. Its just not right and I am pretty sure if the tables were turned and this song was about Katy, you wouldn’t like it.

  21. SomethingCorprt

I love this song and have been waiting for something like this for 6 years! For those of us who’ve put up with someone who has an addiction it really is emotionally and physically draining. Kudos to Perry for getting out of a crappy situation and moving on with her life. Travis McCoy is a dirt bag.

I think you have to be with someone with an addiction to understand that kind of pain. To live with the broken promises, twisted lies … it destroys you as a person if you’re not careful. While it’s definitely not a place you’d want to linger, anger is a natural stage of the grieving process… And addicts, by the way, are so deep in denial that it is likely even a song like this would ruffle his feathers, unless he was really ready to be an adult.

I don’t know him at all. But I do know the pain of living with a manipulative, addicted human being. And it destroys you as a person unless you get serious counseling and wise up.

  23. i think this song is amazing. The typical happy, upbeat songs by Katy Perry are great too, but its nice to see some REAL emotion portrayed in her music. If music is the way she expresses her feelings then she has the 100% right to do so. Imagine being in a relationship with someone like that. She went through alot as well, and tried to help him but i guess it didn’t work. I think this song is GENIUS and i love all of the true emotion she put into it. ♥

She obviously knows about going down the drain as that’s where she’s been steadily going for most of her musical attempts, and as that’s where she came from.
