2010 MTV VMA Predictions: Who Will Win Best Pop Video?

Robbie Daw | September 7, 2010 1:40 pm

Today we kick off our predictions for a few of the key categories at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards (full list of nominees here), an event that has Lady Gaga vying for 13 moon men, Eminem and Beyonce nominated for eight and B.o.B and Florence + The Machine chasing after wins in the respective five areas they were recognized for. In the spotlight today: Best Pop Video.

First of all, we want this to be all about you. So after our own jibber-jabber regarding the 2010 Best Pop Video nominees, be sure to vote for who you think should win in the poll below. (This week we’ll also be highlighting the Best Male Video, Best Female Video and Video Of The Year contenders.)

And then be sure to join us this Sunday, September 12 at 9 p.m. EST for Idolator’s MTV VMAs live blog, where you can chime in on Gaga’s latest performance art piece/bra, state how you think full-time offender Chelsea Handler is handling hosting duties and OMG over who gets into a pop star brawl this time around. (Hint: we’re guessing it won’t be Kanye “Mr. Apologetic” West.)

Alright, on with it…

BEST POP VIDEO NOMINEES: Beyoncé featuring Lady Gaga, “Video Phone (Extended Remix)” B.o.B featuring Bruno Mars, “Nothin’ on You” Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dog, “California Gurls” Ke$ha, “Tik Tok” Lady Gaga, “Bad Romance”

THOUGHTS ON THE NOMINEES: “California Gurls”-sounds-just-like-“Tik Tok” theorists like Howard Stern should have a field day with this one—though we’re guessing the New York shock jock isn’t too bothered with paying attention to these things. B.o.B feels like a filler nominee here, but while Beyonce and Gaga’s “Video Phone” made for a less memorable song than their pair-up on “Telephone,” the glitzy visual at least offered a respectable amount of eye candy.

We’re going to take an educated stab in the dark and state that it’s all going to come down to Gaga’s Alexander McQueen-clad Russian mafia dancefest “Bad Romance” vs. Katy Perry’s Candy Land adventure “California Gurls.” As far as “event” pop videos go, Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok” seems to sink into a tub full of grain alcohol when stacked up against these two.

WILL WIN: “California Gurls.” From pop charts and talk shows to Rolling Stone and Esquire, Katy Perry has been America’s passably-naughty pop sweetheart for the duration of the entire summer. And girls who shoot whipped cream out of their boobs are simply more acceptable than girls who swallow the Rosary.

SHOULD WIN: “Bad Romance.” Look, anyone can strap a can of Cool Whip to their chest. But how many can rock those lobster claw heels and not look like a complete clown (let alone not completely fall over)? Katy, you’ll always have the that “Song Of Summer” tag. Alas, when it comes to the absolute best from this short list of pop videos, “Bad Romance” was just far more imaginative.
