Listen To Madonna’s Lost Tracks “Little Girl” And “Set The Right”

So many old Madonna tracks have surfaced lately we’re thinking of changing her name to the Previously Unreleased Material Girl. While we’re waiting for the pop icon to work out her next identity/album, we’ve come across to two more songs that never made the cut. The so-so “lost” tracks from Hard Candy didn’t do much to hold us over — will a couple of decades-old cuts from Music and American Life fare better? Listen here to decide:

“Little Girl”, below, is a tranquil William Orbit-produced ditty with Madonna earnestly warning daughter (and business partner) Lourdes, “Don’t make the same mistakes I did.” We’re not sure which “mistakes” Madge is referring to — dressing as a promiscuous bride? Burning crosses? Trying to make live chickens look fashionable? There’s a lot to choose from. But Madge isn’t big on apologizing for her outrageous behavior, so we’ll just assume she’s referring to Swept Away. Regardless, Music already had one far superior exploration of the trials and tribulations of young women in “What It Feels Like For A Girl,” so we’re glad this sleepy ballad didn’t take up space on that great album.

“Set The Right” is a leftover from Madonna’s American Life collaboration with Mirwais, feeling very much in that album’s political-minded groove. “Don’t push me to the left, don’t push me to the right,” Madonna sings in a rather catchy chorus (though we’re pretty sure “the right” would be the more objectionable of the two for the woman used her Confessions tour version of “I Love New York” to blast the 43rd president). The track would have been completely at home on American Life, so it’s almost too bad it didn’t make the cut. But given how similar it sounds to what’s already there, it’s no great loss.

In the end, it’s quite clear that neither of these would’ve been strong enough to earn a shot on Glee’s Madonna tribute.
