Adam Lambert’s Malaysian Concert Protested

How unfabulous — the Pan Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), a major fundamentalist party in Malaysia, plans to protest Adam Lambert’s upcoming show in the country, claiming that it promotes a “gay lifestyle”. They’re asking for the concert to be canceled, as homosexuality is a criminal offense in Malaysia. And Adam, whose entire post-Idol career has been met with controversy, has already issued a response.

Adam is set to perform a Glam Nation tour stop at Putra Indoor Stadium in Bukit Jalil after signing a contract dictated by the goverment, which demands that music acts abide by a strict set of rules during shows (which includes staying at least 25 feet from the crowd and covering up any exposed skin). Although Lambert has agreed to modify his act, his show is still facing protests.

“Adam Lambert’s shows… are outrageous, with lewd dancing and a gay performance that includes kissing male dancers, this is not good for people in our country,” said PAS Youth leader Nasrudin Hasan.

Adam took to his Twitter today to make a statement on the protest:

“While I don’t believe that my glamnation tour is in any way offensive I have agreed to make a few minor adjustments out of respect for the Malaysian government. Looking forward to a fun show.

“Does my show ‘promote the gay lifestyle’? It promotes living ANY lifestyle that includes the freedom to seek love and intimacy. Gay, straight, bi, young or old. It’s all inclusive.

“Plus, what’s THE gay lifestyle? There isnt just one. There are so many different kinds of gay people. We have a variety of different lifestyles. There’s not only one lifestyle lived by straight folks. Generalizing….”

Adam is hardly the first pop star who had to tweak their act in order to perform in Malaysia. Gwen Stefani, who also suffered protests from the PAS, had to add some additional fabric to her stage outfits and cover up while performing in the country in 2007.
