Taylor Swift Thinks “Back To December” On New ‘Speak Now’ Track

The second of Taylor Swift’s three promo singles to be added to iTunes ahead of her Speak Now album release (October 25) came today in the form of country-twang tearjerker “Back To December.” While last week’s offering (LP title track “Speak Now”) had the multiple Grammy winner longing for someone else’s man, “Back To December” is a song about letting a good relationship slip through your fingers and the regret that follows. Sniff! Grab a Kleenex and listen below. “Your guard is up and I know why, because the last time you saw me is still burned in the back of your mind / You gave me roses, and I left them there to die,” Swift laments in her new tune.

Heavy stuff, and the wistful, slightly haunting instrumentation gives “Back To December” a dramatic (but still commercial) sheen. Love the bells and strings!

After “Speak Now” and her late summer hit “Mine,” we were beginning to think the country-pop crooner was stuck in a rut with her sound and lyrical content. But “Back To December” is just the slight change in mature direction we were hoping Swift would aim for on her third album.

What do you think of this one? Do you like “Back To December” or do you prefer your Taylor Swift songs upbeat?
