M.I.A. Performs At Scream Awards, Drops New Song, Continues Acting Crazy

Never one to pass up an opportunity to stir some controversy, M.I.A.walked the red carpet at Spike TV’s Scream Awards giving the finger while wearing a niqab veil with robe (emblazoned with lyrics to /\/\/\Y/\ tracks), and later performed “Teqkilla” on the awards show dressed like something out of a Dr. Seuss book as penned by Hunter S. Thompson. And if you haven’t yet gotten your fill of Maya’s bizarre antics, she bought yet another curiously titled domain name to deliver the world an equally puzzling new track. Listen to it below.

Let’s listen to the new track first — we’ll refer to it as “Bedroom To The Hallway To The Road To The World” since that’s the URL for the site that hosts the song (and it’s accompanying visual nonsense).

We’re actually quite enjoying this track, which features Maya rapping about how everyone’s “on my case” while sampling radio DJ tags, until halfway through when the beat dies down and she begins throwing in random sound bites that seem like leftover bits she couldn’t find a place for on the rest of her album. There’s a few catchy parts, but altogether, it’s a mess.

As for her performance at the Scream Awards, here’s a sneak peek of what you can expect — is this somebody you’d pay money to see? Is Maya just being weird for the sake of being weird? Or are these hard-to-swallow tracks and questionable fashion statements part of a bigger message that hasn’t become completely clear yet?

Spike TV’s 2010 Scream Awards airs Tuesday October 19 at 9 p.m, so you’ll know when to avoid it if you’re not feeling M.I.A. live.
