Review Revue: Critics React To Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair” Music Video

Oct 19th, 2010 // 18 Comments

Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair” video arrived yesterday after much anticipation (and even a Sesame Street mash-up). We were curious to know what the Internet thought of the much-hyped, dance-tastic, hair splatter paint vid (complete with heart-shaped mohawk). Head below to see if critics — and tweeting pop stars — were ready to invest in some precautionary neck braces.

willow 2::Entertainment Weekly‘s Music Mix shared the concerns we’re sure many had prior to watching “Whip My Hair”: “I confess I was inclined at first to dismiss her quick rise as the worst kind of showbiz nepotism, and the pop stage as an entirely inappropriate and overly sexualized place for one so young…But this clip is about to put a boom in the chiropractic industry (with possible ancillary benefits for house paint), because girl can snap it.”

::PopEater agreed, “The ‘Whip My Hair’ video is here, and Willow Smith has transcended from Jada and Will Smith’s 9-year-old kiddo to a legitimate star. Seriously — the video stacks up to the incredibly catchy, Rihanna-sounding song…”

willow 3:: While some may debate EvilBeet‘s stance, “Willow Smith has officially made the coolest music video I’ve seen since ‘Telephone,’” we have to agree with their viewpoint that “…This girl is nine years old. We should all be scared.” Seriously! Are we even prepared for what a 12-year-old Willow is capable of?

:: New York Daily News may have summed it up best by saying, “Now this is hairography.”

:: Keri Hilson cooed via Twitter, “OMG Willow’s video is sooooooo cute!!!…I just wanna pinch her cheeks! She’s a star!”

:: Justin Bieber helped spread the word on Twitter for his new “sibling”, “heard my lil sis Willow Smith video is coming out tonight. its CRAZY!! keep a look out for it .”

willow smith 4:: We think just about anyone who’s seen “Whip My Hair” can relate to Sky Ferreira’s tweet,”having a comedown from the high I just got from watching Willow Smith’s video #whipmyhair”

:: And finally, Jordin Sparks lent her support, “I love @officialwillow’s new music video for #whipmyhair. I love the song too! Get it girl! :)”

  6. My God!she is only nine, its just wrong,at nine u shd b shooting small cute home videos not making international hits lyk dis n in this situation she is not talented,it just looks forced 2 me

why can’t these mega stars let their kids have a childhood? adults at 11 – no wonder the likes of lohan and spears exist.

  8. I don’t understand people and their negativity towards her. How does anybody know that Will or Jada or both parents “pushed her” to become a singer? Maybe this was something that she wanted to do since she was old enough to watch her father’s old tapes of him rapping or something who’s to say? I’m appalled at how quickly people try to tear someone and their budding careers down, especially a little girl who IS quite talented.

I believe one of the biggest reasons that Willow gets so much negativity is because she’s got highly respected, well known famous parents: Will Smith and Jada Pinkett. If it had of been some other child, who got discovered singing in a local talent show in their home town, or in front of some barbeque restaurant, it would of been one of the most “adorable” things you could of ever seen.

She can really sing, she has a great voice to be the age she is and she has a very humbled, down to earth persona which makes her a pleasure to be around and work with. Stop being so ungrateful for newer and better talent that we get and appreciate and embrace it.

  9. It’s not as if there have never been great child stars before – you can’t put a price on what the world would’ve missed if Michael Jackson wasn’t allowed to sing until he reached adulthood.

BUT – do you remember when the Huxtables wouldn’t allow their 14-year-old daughter go out wearing lipstick? Now THEY were responsible parents.

Come on, Will and Jada! Even if she cries, “But HE’S been in a film with Jackie Chan!!! Now I WANT TO MAKE A MUSIC VIDEO! MAKE IT HAPPEN DADDYYYYY!” You don’t slap loads of tight clothes and make-up on her and throw her into the tiger’s den of YouTube comments!
