Given that his ode to doomsday didn’t quite cause the earth-shattering cataclysm he predicted, Jay Sean is following up his “2012 (It Ain’t the End)” collaboration with Nicki Minaj by taking it one step further. This time, he’s covering her hit “Your Love” at BBC Live Lounge, sans Nicki. It’s only fair — he did sing on the official remix. Watch a video of the recording session down below.
Jay Sean’s apocalyptic partner-in-crime is literally everywhere right now gearing up for the release of her dolled-up debut album Pink Friday next month, so capitalizing on Minaj’s so-hot-right-now status seems a safe bet. (Or is it? Does anyone think it’ll help Keyshia Cole?) One might have expected the British singer-rapper-producer to spice up the Minaj track, but instead he has pared it down to a light-hearted acoustic tune that’d be right at home on Bruno Mars’ album.
The track gives Jay Sean a chance to flaunt both his singing and rapping abilities, and it all goes down pretty smoothly – though we can’t deny sorely missing the background “dooby dooby doop dop dop dops” Minaj cribbed from Annie Lennox’s “No More ‘I Love Yous.’” We still prefer Minaj’s edgier single version, but it’s fun to hear a take on “Your Love” that actually sounds kinda sweet and romantic.
