So much for Leighton Meester, pop star. (Maybe.) The actress who toyed with our pop-obsessed hearts (and charmed us) with “Your Love’s A Drug” and the slinky “Body Control”, has suddenly abandoned the dance floor for a detour through Nashville. Leighton recorded the downbeat breakup lament “Words I Couldn’t Say” for upcoming Gwyneth Paltrow vehicle Country Strong. It just like a Gossip Girl plot — she flirted with us and then pulled the rug out from under us! But she does a convincing Taylor Swift impression. Hear it below.

We understand she just recorded this for a movie, and it’s actually nice to hear her sing out instead of bury her voice in electro-wash. But we are curious about whether she ever intends to record more pop music. She told MTV that she’s been recording with soft-rock band Check In The Dark, saying “I’ve just been writing for the last six months, like a totally different sound.” (She also mentioned that she’s a big Joni Mitchell fan — funny, you know who else is?) Guess we’ll have to see if our good girl went bad — or just folkie.
