“Why isn’t there a female rapper turned mogul?” asks Nicki Minaj in her MTV documentary, My Time, basically forewarning us that that’s her mission from here on in. The humanizing doc, which aired last night, kicks off six weeks before the release of Pink Friday, with Minaj tweeting a pre-order link for her album. Moments later, her LP rises to #4 on Amazon. Such is the instant success of Harajuku Barbie, born Onika Miraj, who comes off as both a confident diva as well as an ambitious, vulnerable, and personable woman. Watch a clip after the jump.

“It’s my first time ever performing at the VMAs, and I’m nervous,” Nicki admits, trying on her purple-and-pink “Check It Out” outfit in a style session. “Because I know people can’t wait to bash me. That’s what they do, that’s their job.”

Rest easy, Barbie – not that many people are bashing you or your debut album nowadays.
