When one thinks of the greats from overseas who have influenced American indie bands, naturally UK acts like Joy Division, The Smiths, the Stone Roses and Cheryl Cole come to mind. Or at least Cheryl Cole came to mind for 2010 chart-toppers Vampire Weekend, who turned out an impressive, toe-tapping cover of the Girls Aloud vixen/X Factor judge’s 2009 debut solo single “Fight For This Love” while appearing on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge today. Listen below. VW frontman Ezra Koenig told Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton, “One day we were in the car driving to the airport and we heard a song that reminded us of K-Ci & JoJo’s ‘All My Life’, which is a very important song for people our age. We were like, ‘This song is awesome.’ Then we saw her on tabloids. Who knew she was famous?”

Well, just about anyone outside of the U.S. (Although rumor has it she’s a contender to be a judge on Simon Cowell’s revamped X Factor once it premieres stateside in 2011—get excited, Vampire Weekend!)

Here’s Cole’s “Fight For This Love” and K-Ci & JoJo’s 1998 #1 hit “All My Life”:
