Cee Lo Puts On A Forget-ing Great ‘SNL’ Set

Has a cleaned up version of an explicit song ever been more ripe for parody than Cee-Lo’s “F**k You”? Saturday Night Live doesn’t think so. Not only did SNL recruit the James Lipton impersonator to perform the Sunday morning-friendly version of the tune last night, they also booked Green’s Glee stand-in Gwyneth Paltrow as host. In one pretty [forget]ing funny skit, the unlikely comic duo poked fun at the FCC by subbing “forget” for a certain other F-word the Lady Killer is all too familiar with. Check it out after the jump.

It comes as no surprise to see Paltrow and Green working together — Cee-Lo has hinted about a possible collaboration with the Nashville newbie in the future. And thanks to her memorable turn on Glee, Mrs. Coldplay is cemented in our minds as being associated with the radio-friendly version of the song almost as much as Cee-Lo is with the original.

Like many SNL skits, the “Forget You” routine spreads its premise pretty thin, though it’s worth it for such hilarious euphemisms as “bull sugar,” “Nintendo,” and even a plug for Paltrow’s Golden Globe-nominated “Country Strong” used as profanity. Cee-Lo is clearly enjoying himself here — witness his mischievous, Cheshire cat grin after dropping a certain feline-inspired expletive. And it was great fun to see Paltrow make fun of her own controversial country crossover in the opening monologue and her impersonation of Taylor Swift at a bar mitzvah in another sketch.

As for Cee-Lo, the Gnarls Barkley singer gamely delivered a squeaky-clean rendition of his hit — though it’s a shame he didn’t spice things up in a duet with Gwyneth for a fresher take on the track.

He did, however, deliver a rousing performance of his Lady Killer tune “Bright Lights Bigger City” for his second number — and now that we’ve seen “Forget You” covered by other artists and parodied on SNL, we think we’re officially ready to forget it for the time being and focus on what the upcoming Grammy performer has in store for us next.
