Grammy Awards 2011: We Pick The Pop Winners

Feb 7th, 2011 // 30 Comments

Sunday’s 2011 Grammy Awards telecast is sure to be noteworthy — everyone from Lady Gaga to Gwyneth Paltrow seems to be on the bill to perform — but as stoked as we are to see whether Cee Lo sticks to the censored version of his song or lets the FCC go ballistic, we’re most excited to see who wins what.

This week we’ll be pitching our best guesses for which act will nab each category in the Big Four—Best New Artist, and Album, Song and Record of the Year. But today, we present to you Idolator’s picks for all the major pop categories. Jump below to see if you agree with us, and let us know if you can figure out why B.o.B’s collab with rap superstar Eminem, “Airplanes II”, is up for Best Pop Collaboration, while his similarly-styled hit “Nothin’ On You” with pop maestro Bruno Mars is nominated in the rap categories.

BEST FEMALE POP VOCAL PERFORMANCE
“King of Anything” – Sara Bareilles
“Halo (Live)” – Beyoncé
“Chasing Pirates” – Norah Jones
“Bad Romance” – Lady Gaga
“Teenage Dream” – Katy Perry

WILL WIN: It’s a toss-up between Katy Perry and Lady Gaga — both have LPs in the running for Album Of The Year — but Gaga’s got the edge.
SHOULD WIN: We’re astonished neither Katy or Gaga’s songs were nominated for Song or Record of the Year. But between these two teacks, “Bad Romance” is just plain epic. (Not to mention, fans have been ra-ra-ooh-la-la-ing since November 2009, and the song has yet to show its age.)

BEST MALE POP VOCAL PERFORMANCE
“Haven’t Met You Yet” – Michael Bublé
“This Is It” – Michael Jackson
“Whataya Want From Me” – Adam Lambert
“Just The Way You Are” – Bruno Mars
“Half Of My Heart” – John Mayer

WILL WIN: It depends. Do the Grammys want to throw one last award to Michael Jackson? Or do they want to bestow as many awards as possible to Bruno Mars? It’s a showdown between the King of Pop and pop’s newest duke for this one.
SHOULD WIN: Adam Lambert can out sing every (living) person in this category, and his Pink-written tune showed he’s got more to offer than glittery codpieces and loud money notes. The American Idol alum has got some serious emotional depth.

BEST POP COLLABORATION WITH VOCALS
“Airplanes II” – B.o.B, Eminem & Hayley Williams
“Imagine” – Herbie Hancock, Pink, India.Arie, Seal, Konono No. 1, Jeff Beck & Oumou Sangare
“If It Wasn’t For Bad” – Elton John & Leon Russell
“Telephone” – Lady Gaga & Beyoncé
“California Gurls” – Katy Perry & Snoop Dogg

WILL WIN: A win for “Airplanes II” provides yet another opportunity to award Eminem, as well as simultaneously honor B.o.B, who was shut out of the Best New Artist category.
SHOULD WIN: “Telephone” still has us running to the dancefloor. Plus, we’ve heard the demo version that included no Beyoncé verse — and it’s nowhere near as good.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY POP DUO OR GROUP
“Don’t Stop Believin’ (Regionals Version)” – Glee Cast
“Misery” – Maroon 5
“The Only Exception” – Paramore
“Babyfather” – Sade
“Hey, Soul Sister (Live)” – Train

WILL WIN: Train’s track was everywhere this year, from Glee to Spanish college campuses.
SHOULD WIN: Paramore’s “The Only Exception” is not only the best song of the bunch, but we’re too curious to see how the band will accept their Grammy in the wake of their recent split with two members. Shout outs to Zac and Josh Farro, or zipped lips?

BEST POP VOCAL ALBUM
My World 2.0 – Justin Bieber
I Dreamed A Dream – Susan Boyle
The Fame Monster – Lady Gaga
Battles Studies – John Mayer
Teenage Dream – Katy Perry

WILL WIN: Lady Gaga’s The Fame Monster. Last year Gaga made out with the awards in the Dance categories (no—not literally, sicko!), and if Grammy feels its too lofty to hand her an award for Album Of The Year this time around, Best Pop Vocal Album could well be the consolation prize.
SHOULD WIN: Gaga. She busted her ass touring that record, crafting iconic videos for the singles and making memorable TV appearances. And she entertained us every step of the way.

BEST DANCE RECORDING
“Rocket” – Goldfrapp
“In For The Kill” – La Roux
“Dance In The Dark” – Lady Gaga
“Only Girl (In The World)” – Rihanna
“Dancing On My Own” – Robyn

WILL WIN: Rihanna’s “Only Girl” was a bona fide smash, topping the charts around the globe and giving the Barbadian songstress a proper out-of-the-gate smash to kick the Loud campaign off with.
SHOULD WIN: Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” got practically no radio love last year, which, let’s face it—is a deplorable crime. This would be an amazing way to validate the Swede singer’s talent for catchy hooks and smart pop lyrics, and right the wrongs in the mainstream music world for overlooking her.

BEST ELECTRONIC/DANCE ALBUM
These Hopeful Machines – BT
Further – The Chemical Brothers
Head First – Goldfrapp
Black Light – Groove Armada
La Roux – La Roux

WILL WIN: La Roux has the advantage of currently having the highest profile in this category, thanks to the duo’s breakout U.S. hit “Bulletproof.” (Side note: we’re nearly at two years since their debut LP was released overseas. Some new music, please!)
SHOULD WIN: Goldfrapp’s Head First. It sure didn’t land on our 10 Out Of ’10: Idolator’s Favorite Albums Of The Year list because we disliked it.

  1. “Hey, Soul Sister” was released during last year’s eligibility season, so it wasn’t eligible for this year’s Grammys. Because the song became so popular, though, the live version, which was released during this year’s eligibility season, was entered for consideration.

  2. BEST FEMALE POP VOCAL PERFORMANCE

Should win “King of Anything” – Sara Bareilles, this song is fantastic Sara really hit a note with this one, by artistry standards this song deserves the award.’Will Win: Bad Romance, But in terms of “Vocal Performance” obviously Beyonce halo’s vocally crushes them all but, Bad Romance will inevitably win

    BEST MALE POP VOCAL PERFORMANCE

Should win “Haven’t Met You Yet” – Michael Bublé hands down the single most deserving song in the category. Will win “Haven’t Met You Yet” – Michael Bublé I like Adam Lambert in all but next to Mr Bublé he just seems like trash, I mean that in the best way possible

    BEST POP COLLABORATION WITH VOCALS

Should Win and WILL Win “Airplanes II” – B.o.B, Eminem & Hayley Williams

BEST PERFORMANCE BY POP DUO OR GROUP

Should Win and WILL win Hey, Soul Sister (Live)” – Train

    BEST POP VOCAL ALBUM

Should Win Battles Studies – John Mayer. Will win The Fame Monster – Lady Gaga

Agree that Adam Lambert can outsing them all and he is in very good company! He has an advantage of authentically singing any genre that he chooses, perfectly with incredible ease. His breath control, power, perfectly pitched baritone, tenor range, creative phrasing as well asability to sing a tender, soft ballad is what sets him apart from any other artist of this generation. There is a lot more than meets the eye, and that’s saying something. He brings excitement to music that is sorely lacking. He deserves the grammy on pure talent alone!

  5. Kim

This lovely article is one of the many articles I’ve seen which stated that Adam Lambert ‘should win’ the Grammy award for ‘Best Male Pop Vocal Performance’. I really hope Adam will win the award on Sunday.

  6. JerryW

Agree with the article..if it is based on voice alone..Adam Lambert should take the win..Folks who talk trash here…did we forget the Drug charge / Bruno….????

  7. Gosh, you guys are up Lady Gagas ass just as bad as perezhilton is

  8. sizzling

My guess is that Adam Lambert will win. There have been too many articles by now that state he should win. If it does not happen, that’s okay too. The nomination alone within a group of respected artists is a big nod already and a big step in this man’s career.

  9. Wow. Lots of predictions coming out saying that Adam Lambert should win but won’t, and that it’ll be Mars or Jackson. The pundits have it right.

It would be nice, really nice, if the Grammy voters would think like you guys and see whose vocal performance was really best through the temptations of sentiment and popularity. Isn’t that the important criteria for this category? Lambert blew the others clean out of the water with the vocals not just on this song, but on his album. It’s insane what he can do with his voice. If you haven’t heard this album, For Your Entertainment, through a good set of headphones on a decent sound system, I don’t wanna hear jack about him “just screaming.” He’s epic.

Personally, I think the only singer who even came close to close was Buble. I’ve never been a fan, obviously I associate him with old-fashioned music, but I was really surprised when I first heard the nominated song. He’s a more impressive singer than I ever realized and he turned in, hands down, the second best performance in this category, IMO. He has incredible tone and control.

And for the ladies… Gaga all the way, baby! Everyone’s saying she should and will win, which won’t quite make up for Lambert not winning, but at least maybe I won’t be totally crushed on Grammy night. The more I hear Bad Romance, the more impressed I become. Totally out-there, but technically excellent. This song is why I bought the album, you know?

Glambert and Gaga all the way! *crosses fingers*

  10. Jesse

To bad SHOULD win and WILL win don’t match. What is wrong with this picture? Adam Lambert is by far the best singer in his category and most definitely SHOULD win, but he makes people nervous!

Other SHOULD wins are Janelle Monae and Ray LaMontayne….but they won’t????

The Grammy’s are supposed to be awarded for artistic achievement, and not commercial success. Hmmmm……Some how I doubt it?

  11. @Brandon: Adam was my favorite and Michael Buble my second-favorite in this category, so we (I think?) agree on the two best. But you can’t call a human being trash and have it be “in the best way possible.” Do you think you help Michael, as a fan, when you call his competition names? I don’t.

  12. buffy522

That Buble song was so bubble gum that I needed to brush my teeth after hearing it. Adam Lambert should win.

  13. @Maryann Your right we do indeed agree they are the best in the category, Adam Lambert is extremely talented and deserving, I was out of line there cause I do consider myself a Glambert fan, I’m irrationally defensive with my Bublé though lol I just find his songs to be so effortlessly classy, charming, enjoyable pop that remain very true to he himself.

If Adam Is to win I wont be upset (too much)

  14. Amanda

Again, lots of these predictions things saying Adam should win, but won’t. It’s such a shame because he really does deserve it more than anyone in that category. If we were to base the vote on talent alone, Adam wins.

  15. Hey You!

“Nothin’ on You” was submitted to Rap and “Airplanes II” to Pop to maximize on nominations.

Think “You Belong With Me” in Pop Female and “White Horse” in Country Female last year. Labels use that tactic every year to get artists a bunch of nominations.

  16. kat23morg

Award for best pop male vocal live performance…key word live…should go to adam lambert…especially now that mars was found guilty of possession of cocaine…please people…music industry big wigs who award this…adam can sing the phone book..perform while singing it and make it a hit…no comparison…

  17. kat23morg

Trash? How so…I have not seen Buble do what Adam has done this past year…have major success with his cd and singles and videos..have a sold out tour in US and overseas…work tirelessly for gay rights….(it gets better campaign)…for school arts programs…Donors Choose Org…and now raised almost 290K for clean water charity that aids clean water for third world countries…all while touring …promoting….on and on. Adam is nothing but an excellent role model and he can out sing any current pop artist out there…with no dubbing or auto tunning…Doubt me…go to Glamtour, Foxwood, Wanna Whole Lotta Love rendition…or any other song he did there or other sites…live he is even better…Saw him twice and was totally blown away…he is point blank…amazing vocally…performance wise and just drop dead gorgeous and sweet…He took the time at autograph session to talk to my teenage daughter …compliment her on her portrait of him…sign it.. and hug and kiss her on the cheek …very sweet man…He should win this one…

  18. TRASH …. is definiely not a word that should ever be directed at ADAM! How can you say .. in a good way … PLEASE … TRASH is something you want to get rid of. I don’t see you as ‘liking’ ADAM at all … not using that term! I don’t think Buble is better than ADAM … he’s ‘old school/sound … like Sinatra .. Martin … but I would never denegrate him by calling him ‘Trash in a good way’. Had to get that said … but in ALL honesty … I think ADAM has a very GOOD chance of winning … IF they stick to VOCAL performance on the chosen songs. Too bad they can’t base it on some of the other songs on his FYE album too …. SOAKED … A LOADED SMILE …. and BROKEN OPEN (written by ADAM) …. absolutely FLAWLESS VOCALS!!! Hope the Universe is picking up on our POSITIVE vibes!!! … Love .. Light .. PEACE

  19. Miza

Brandon Hall, how offensive can you be to Mr. Adam Lambert calling him Trash? How rude! Adam is the best male vocalist in the world! I like Buble, but Adam has encapsulated my heart with his amazing voice. He is the best live entertainer and he will be a legend. Not to mention his charity work which makes me love him more.

  20. Katy forevea

Agree I think Teenage Dream deserves Best Pop Vocal Album

  21. Katy forevea

Bruno Mars will win Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

  22. Katy forevea

Lady Gaga will win Best Female Pop Vocal Performance its an obvious win!

  23. Katy forevea

Rihanna should win for Best Dance Recording but im thinking grammy voters may give it to Lady Gaga for “dance in the dark”.

  24. Katy forevea

Song of the Year should be Lady Antebellum for Need You Now.

  25. Katy forevea

Best New Artist should be Drake or Mumford and Sons but the grammy’s may give this win to Florence + the Machine.

  26. Alex

I agree that Adam SHOULD win, but I kinda figured they would give the award to someone else, that’s typical. Michael Jackson would be a nice pick considering what an amazing singer he is, but if Taylor Swift managed to beat MJ before on best song artist of the year, I’m sure Bruno Mars will win. That’s just how it is. But if you think about it. Bruno has only been famous for what, a year? 6 months? He only got famous over a hit single. Adam has gained a fan base on idol 2 years ago, and his fame has been growing ever since. They both have two hit singles so far (i think. idk about bruno but i know adam does) and both songs still play on the radio. Not to mention that Adam can sing circles around bruno. So yes, Adam should win. I really want him to. Bruno can afford to lose a grammy to Adam because Bruno has so many other nominations. Adam has one. Let Adam have this.

  27. Ronnie

The woman who led the way in album sales globally for the last two years and who has hundreds of millions of fans all over the planet will not be performing even though she is nominated for a Grammy.

But she will be there. She has already stated that she has no chance of winning, however, that she is “amazed” that she was even nominated.

I laugh every time she sets new records for sales. And her income keeps soaring.

I do not even need to name her. Everybody on earth knows her name. The most talked about musical performer since the Beatles.

The Grammy Awards continue to sink into being of no real importance within the musical world. Each year they get further and further away from the people on this planet who actually physically buy albums.

Its becoming a view of just a narrow slice of music sales. A minority slice. The show is more about sexual expression than truely great music now.

I no longer watch it. Any great performances are always up on youtube anyway.

  28. esd

Marshel still the winner herd me

  29. esd

he deserves it more than anybody out there
