Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green and Adam Levine continued pairing up their team members for week two of the battle rounds on NBC’s recently-renewed series The Voice last night. And there was some true talent on display in all corners. But it was Cee Lo’s match-up of Texans Tje Austin and Nakia and Xtina’s pairing of rock chick Beverly McClellan and soaring tenor Justin Grennan that stole the night. Only one member from each team walked away with a remaining spot on the show. Watch below. For this week’s battle round, Adam Levine somewhat unfairly stacked the immensely talented Javier Colon against upbeat beauty Angela Wolf. Their duet was ironically “Stand By Me,” though Angela didn’t really have a chance when it came time to out-sing Javier.

Blake Shelton’s pairing of Elenowen (i.e. Josh and Nicole Johnson) and Jared Blake was a little more up in the air. The folky duo and hard-luck rocker were thrown a curve ball when Shelton chose Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s Motown classic “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” for them to sing. Simple mathematics would make it seem that Josh and Nicole’s beautiful harmonies would eradicate Jared’s gruff vocal delivery, but it was the quite the opposite — Jared actually proved the more magnetic performer on stage while Elenowen seemed uncomfortable and confused when placed in front of a large audience. Sadly, the married duo were sent packing for life back in Nicole’s parents’ basement.

Anyway, on with those two killer battles! First up was Tje and Nakia from Cee-Lo’s team, who were tasked with Ne-Yo’s “Closer” as their duet. Burly Nakia wound up victorious.

Next we had Justin Grennan and Beverly McClellan from Xtina’s team. We actually thought Justin held his own when belting out The Who’s “Baba O’Riley” with vocal powerhouse Beverly. Alas, his best just wasn’t good enough when it came time for Aguilera to choose one of them.

Is it too much to ask for one more duet from this electric pair, NBC?

Two more weeks of battle rounds remain before Adam, Blake, Cee Lo and Xtina’s teams of four take the competition public and duke it out for America’s votes.
