Today’s The Day To Hear Shania Twain’s New Single “Today Is Your Day”

Jun 13th, 2011 // 5 Comments

Shania Twain is coming back into the spotlight from pretty much every direction. She’s got a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame; her new reality show, Why Not? With Shania Twain, premiered on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network; and she’ll soon head to Las Vegas for a two-year residency. Spearheading all of this news is the debut of her first single since 2005, “Today Is Your Day”. Was it worth the six-year wait? Today’s the day to find out — listen below.

Shania Twain – “Today Is Your Day”

Shania is obviously no longer working with her longtime producer Mutt Lange — you know, the same man she was married to who ended up cheating on her with her close friend whose husband Shania ended up marrying. Taking his place is Nathan Chapman, who has worked with Taylor Swift on all three of her albums.

May we paraphrase one of Twain’s biggest hits to express our reactions to this song: Man! I feel like I’m asleep. The entire song is both musically and lyrically lazy (goes the chorus: “Today is your day / And nothing can stand in your way / Today is your day / Everything’s going your way / Today, Today, Today, Today”), and it’s a huge letdown after anxiously awaiting new material from the country-pop superstar for six years.

We’re 100% pulling for Shania to make a comeback and deliver another hit single that will storm the charts. But this ain’t it. We get the relevant meaning behind this snoozy tune, but Shania is a total spitfire — remember her giddy stint on American Idol as guest judge and mentor? — and she deserves something with much more personality.

What do you think of Shania’s new single?

  1. Ana

Great song! It’s not the usual rock’n'roll Shania, but still a good song nonetheless.

  2. Why

When I think of Shania, I think of my mom and my aunts. This song sounds totally like it’s perfect for Disney and written for my little cousins though.

  3. I’m glad she’s back after all that she went through!

  4. CountryMusic Fan

I’m glad she’s back and wish her all the best. Country music needs here. This song however, is not going to get her back to the top. While I get the message that she’s on a comeback – this song is about as interesting as wheat toast. Shania should stick to performing and let a professional song writer actually write the songs.

  5. G-string

I definitely agree with a couple of people here…. this song isn’t going to bring her back. The song is pretty but lacks punch. It sounds the same throughout…one sits and waits for it for crescendo, and then it doesn’t…..so I find it somewhat disappointing. I’m interested to hear what the rest of the album sounds like. I’m just happy she’s found love again.
