Lil Mama And Snoop Dogg Sing A Tale Of Two Cities In “NY NY LA LA”

East Coast and West Coast anthems often seem at odds with each other — you’re either singing the praises of the brightly-lit concrete jungle in Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State Of Mind,” or you’re basking in the joys of scantily-clad beach-drinking on Katy Perry’s “California Gurls.” But now Lil Mama and Snoop Dogg have managed to craft a danceable ditty that toasts both coasts in the new track “NY NY LA LA.” It’s a fitting tribute, given that Snoop joined Katy on her ode to the Golden State, while Lil Mama once crashed a performance of “Empire State” at the MTV Awards. Hear it below.

“L-I-L M-A-M-A / New York, New York, LA, LA,” Lil Mama sings over the dirty beat of this track. While it may not be as instantly catchy as the above-mentioned celebrations of New York and California, “NY NY LA LA” is definitely a step in the right direction for the “On & On & On” rapper who appears to be making something of a comeback all of a sudden. (But man oh man, is that cover art atrocious or what? Way to make two awesome cities look totally drab and uninviting!)

And while we doubt Nicki Minaj will feel the urge to copycat this tune, we do think Snoop Dogg would be better served sticking with Lil Mama than Charlie Sheen and Carmen Electra. It’s nice to hear a song that allows for equal-opportunity praise of both coasts (sorry, Midwest!), isn’t it? They are two very different and diverse cities, after all. Maybe we can all get along.

What do you think of Lil Mama’s latest?
