Following the July 4 shooting death of Nicki Minaj’s cousin Nicholas Telmanque in New York, a timely track from the hip hop diva titled “We Miss You” surfaced online yesterday. But lest any fans think the Pink Friday rapstress quickly hit the studio and cobbled together the song as a dedication to her slain family member, she took to Twitter to explain the origins of the somber tune. “Tho the lyrics of ‘We Miss You’ eerily depict the circumstances surrounding my cousin’s death, I wrote & recorded that song on 5/24/2010,” Minaj tweeted yesterday.

She then added that the track is an unauthorized leak, and that it “was sent to Mariah Carey & Keyshia Cole over a year ago for a possible feature. It didn’t make Pink Friday due to clearance issues.”

Nicki finished by showing her appreciation to her supporters in the wake of her cousin’s death. “Thank u ALL for your kind words and well wishes,” she wrote before signing off.

Well, there you have it. Sorry to deflate your rainbow-colored wigs over “We Miss You,” Barbies.
