Lady Gaga Compares Removing A Hat To Organ Donation In New ‘V’ Column

Never one for subtlety, Lady Gaga is causing a bit of a stir (again) with readers who are finding the Song of Summer girl’s over-the-top declarations in her latest V column a bit wearying. In the piece (her second for V), the Emmy darling defends her outre fashion sensibilities with statements like, “If you were to ask me to remove my Philip Treacy hat at a party, in truth it is the emotional and physical equivalent of requesting I remove my liver.” A little over-dramatic, right? Head below for more choice quotes and a link to the full article, then decide for yourself whether you feel like it’s time for Lady Gaga to get off her high (fashion) horse.

In Gaga’s first V column, she made such immodest claims as: “‘Born This Way’ was a triumph as a pop song and a social statement” and “I am an obsessed pop cultural expert. And, perhaps, between my music, performance art, and this column, I will be remembered as such.”

This time around, she’s no less sanctimonious, claiming: “I know not the difference between the hair that grows from my head, and the teal wigs that grow from my imagination.” (Sounds a bit like a lyric excised from “Hair,” right?) The memorandum is addressed to “Little Monsters,” “Fashion-Sexuals,” “The World,” “My Liver,” and “My Mole,” amongst others. (Not receiving the memo: Bette Midler.)

In the piece, the world’s most famous intern advises readers to make bold fashion statements that reflect who they are inside: “And this fantasy is part of the real and honest you. It is a lie inside, waiting to be unlocked to become true.” If it were up to Lady Gaga, perhaps we’d all be walking around looking like this.

And somehow, this all ties in with her “Schiße” lyric, “I DON’T SPEAK GERMAN BUT I CAN IF YOU LIKE” (yes, it’s in all caps) — though how it connects is a bit of a mystery to us.

Certainly the eccentric ivory tickler has the right sentiment, conveying a Madonna-like desire for fans to express themselves through fashion. It’s a positive message, one the Fame Monster has been preaching loud and often ever since she announced Born This Way. But does she have to sound so self-righteous doing so?

Yes, by now we are used to Gaga’s grandiosity — and often, we love her for it. But this is one of those moments when we’re not quite on board with the pedestal she’s put herself on. At the end of the day, we’re talking about clothes and pop music here, not a cure for cancer. We know Mother Monster cares deeply for her little ones and inspires many, but with statements like, “It is my destiny to exist halfway between fantasy and reality at all times,” is she giving herself a bit too much credit this time around?
