Skylar Grey: The Lollapalooza Interview

While at Lollapalooza last weekend, singer-songwriter Skylar Grey performed dark pop songs from her upcoming LP Invinsible (including “Monster,” “Beautiful Nightmare” and “Weirdo”), and gave some vocal assistance to Eminem for a rendition of their hit with Dr. Dre, “I Need A Doctor.” She also took a break from the stage to sit down with us at the Lollapalooza artist lounge (which we co-sponsored along with Rock The Vote) and discuss her evolution as an artist and songwriter.

“Since I wrote ‘Love The Way You Lie,’ my whole life changed,” Skylar said while reflecting on career up to this point. “Here I am at Lollapalooza, singing with Eminem. It’s just crazy.” Invinsible will be Skylar’s first album for producer Alex Da Kid‘s new KIDinaKORNER imprint under the Interscope label. But while it may seem like the 25-year-old Wisconsin native came out of nowhere, she’s been steadily working on her career for years.

“I actually was an artist my whole life,” said Grey, who has worked in the past with Duncan Shiek and toured with k.d. lang, Daniel Powter and Jamie Cullum. “Writing for other people was never part of the plan. It happened by accident. I wrote ‘Love The Way You Lie’ thinking I would sing it. Of course, I was not well known, so having a big name feature was beneficial.”

Check out our interview with Skylar, where she also talked about connecting with her fans and meeting Marilyn Manson, who she says is “really inspiring to be around.”
