Amy Winehouse’ death at the age of 27, by many accounts, carried with it a grim familiarity. By coincidence or not, Winehouse joined the ranks of “The 27 Club”, grouped for eternity with other remarkable musicians who passed before their time. The Jane Doze, a female DJ duo based in New York City, decided to celebrate the music of the club’s impressive mix of artists by creating a mashup using samples from their songs. Head below for Idolator’s exclusive premiere of the duo’s “Forever 27”.

The Jane Doze’s mash-up includes footage of and music by the club’s most revered members: Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Robert Johnson, The Doors’ Jim Morrison, Rolling Stones’ guitarist Brian Jones and Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain. The clip begins with painter and graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, who died in 1998 — like the musicians, he was 27.

“We wanted to create a mix that would not only honor Amy’s memory, but also those of all the iconic musicians who passed away at the age of 27,” the duo told us. “Though the musical styles of each artist in this mashup vary, we’ve fused them together creating a unique tribute to the talent and timelessness they shared.”

The sampled songs are as follows (in order of appearance):

Amy Winehouse, “Back To Black” Rolling Stones, “Paint It Black” The Doors, “Love Me Two Times” Jimi Hendrix, “If 6 was 9” Janis Joplin, “Summertime” Robert Johnson, “Hellhound On My Trail” Nirvana, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”

Hearing these artists’ music fill the same space just reconfirms that each one left us much, much too soon.
