Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger” Moves To #1, No Thanks To The VMAs

Though Maroon 5 was left out of this past weekend’s VMA festivities, it appears Adam Levine – who has made it perfectly clear how he feels about modern day MTV – doesn’t need a moon man to score a #1 hit.  “Moves Like Jagger” has finally topped the Hot 100, making the whistle-happy tune the band’s first #1 since their 2007 single “Makes Me Wonder.” (This is the first time Christina Aguilera, who guests on the song, has seen the top of the charts since 2001’s “Lady Marmalade.”)

The Voice coaches’ groovy tune is currently at #3 on the iTunes charts, just six places above Levine’s collaboration with Gym Class Heroes’, “Stereo Hearts”. But before all the pop stars there start giving the middle finger to MTV, it’s undeniable to see the VMAs’ influence in the rest of the iTunes Top 10 — Adele’s “Someone Like You” (#1), Lady Gaga’s “You And I” (#3), Cobra Starship’s “You Make Me Feel…” (#5) and Beyonce’s “Love On Top” (#7) were no doubt aided by their inclusion in Sunday’s awards show.

Meanwhile, the 2011 MTV VMAs queen Katy Perry doesn’t fair quite so well this week – her single “Last Friday Night (TGIF)” falls from #1 to #5. Alas, nothing gold can stay, even with a rap verse from Missy Elliott.
