Adele’s “Someone Like You” Becomes Her Second Chart-Topping Hit Of 2011

She may have lost out on snagging the Mercury Prize in London last night, but Vogue cover girl Adele no doubt felt some consolation today upon finding out she’s topped the Billboard Hot 100 for a second time this year. The 22-year-old singer from across the pond received enough of a sales and airplay boost following her performance of somber ballad “Someone Like You” at the MTV VMAs two Sundays ago to send the song up 18 positions on the chart to #1. “Someone Like You” displaces Maroon 5 and Christina Aguileras  “Moves Like Jagger” from the top of the Hot 100, thus making it two weeks in a row with a song containing the word “like” in the title at #1. (Fascinating!)

Adele’s ballad is now her second chart-topping single this year, following the seven-week reign of “Rolling In The Deep.” It’s also only her third Top 40 hit in the US (her first being “Chasing Pavements,” which peaked at #21 three years ago).

“Someone Like You” previously topped both the UK and Australian charts earlier this year. Billboard notes that the song’s parent album 21 has now sold 3.3 million copies since its release in the States in February.

Katy Perry and Adele are the only artists so far to rack up more than one #1 single on the Hot 100 in 2011. UPDATE: How could we forget that Britney Spears indeed had two #1s this year, with both “Hold It Against Me” and her feature on the remix of Rihanna’s “S&M”? Our punishment for this oversight is to keep on dancing till the world ends!
