The Ellen DeGeneres Show is thankfully back after a summer break, and today the blonde hostess aired segments of her spending time backstage with one of her favorite guests, Taylor Swift, during the “Mean” singer’s recent stint at L.A.’s Staples Center. Ellen called Taylor her “protege” before the pair did vocal warm-ups together. She then gave Swift an ice sculpture of a swan, accompanied her during a cover of Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” by playing a fork on a washboard and conducted a “serious” interview with the CMA Awards-nominated singer. Watch below. “Out of the way, everyone! America’s sweetheart is coming through,” DeGeneres yelled while walking with Swift backstage. “And Taylor Swift is with me!”

For the finale of the segment, Ellen popped up on stage at the Staples Center during one of Taylor’s Speak Now Tour gigs, and played triangle with the band as they performed “Our Song.”
