Lady Gaga To Become Queen’s New Singer?

Oct 6th, 2011 // 18 Comments

Lady Gaga and Queen’s Brian May struck quite a friendship after he lent his guitar-slaying prowess on her single “You And I” and appeared during her performance of the song at the 2011 VMAs. May was so taken with the pop star, in fact, that he reportedly wants Gaga — who got her stage name from Queen song “Radio Ga Ga” — to take over Freddie Mercury’s role as the lead singer of the band. Say wha?

Speaking to the UK’s Daily Express at the BMI Awards, May discussed a possible solution to the “singer problem” they’ve had since Freddie Mercury’s passing in two decades ago.

“We get a lot of offers to work with other people,” he said. “I worked with Lady Gaga and she’s very creative and is someone we’ve talked about singing, fronting the band with. She’s not just a singer, she writes her own material… Lady Gaga has said she would like to do something with us.”

Look, we don’t want to break the bad (obvious) news to you as you daydream of Lady Gaga dressing up like Jo Calderone and touring around the country with Queen, singing “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “We Will Rock You” and “Don’t Stop Me Now”, but this is never going to actually happen. Never. Perhaps the two acts will perform together again in some context, but the woman is busy singing her own damn songs and preparing her own Born This Way tour. She’s doing just fine as a solo act, thankyouverymuch.

Of course, if she did front the band, it’d be a dream come true for her. Check out Gaga shedding a tear just talking about the iconic rock group:

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Lady Gaga fan but her “replacing” Freddie Mercury just wouldn’t seem right. I think it’s best if she remains a solo artist and nobody “replaces” Freddie Mercury. Both [Lady Gaga and Queen] are great as they are and colliding them will bring mixed/negative opinions.

Replacing Freddie with a mediocre singer? NO WAY!

…no.. just.. no. nobody one can replace Freddie.. not gaga, not anyone, this is just wrong

  4. OMG

Gaga is fine…but replacing Freddy???? Hell no!!! No one can do that! My God!

  5. Sarah

I love Queen. I love Lady Gaga.

Of course she can never replace Freddy. There’s only 1 Freddy. But there’s also only 1 Lady Gaga. And “xadax”, you’re dead wrong: Lady Gaga is NOT a “mediocre” singer. She does have impressive chops.

Surely you people remember the tribute to Freddy. Why not let Lady Gaga have a spin at it for a moment? Of course it wouldn’t be permanent. Brian May knows how to handle Queen better than you do, and if he thinks it would work, I certainly respect his genius. I’d like to hear it.

I don’t think Gaga should replace Mercury, nor should she attempt to cover classic Queen songs with the rest of the band. I would, however, love to see what would happen when the creativity of these two iconic artists came together! I think they could make some really awesome music that infuses classic rock sounds and styles with some serious pop vocals and some of the most insanely awesome lyrics of all time.

  7. Gaga + Queen = Perfect mix

Beg your pardon ? mediocre singer ? Erhmm, she is the only megastar living atm, she can sing any songs of Liza Minelly or Sinatra and she is also a pianist, composer and so on. I am a profesional musician myself (piano) and can say she is absolutely stuning when she sings live or play the piano, or both.

check out what gaga can do (jazz), is insanely hard of doing btw, ask anyone who knows

Gaga is a very mediocre singer.

I’m a huge Queen fan and I’m really liking this idea. I don’t like the style of Gaga’s music, but I’ll admit she has a great voice. And I think Queen knows what they’re doing. If they believe that Gaga has the talent and ability to perform with them, then I will put my trust in them and see what comes out of it.

Voice from Poland… No way ! This must be a joke yea???…if Gaga will be vocalist of Queen ,then this will be sound like “We will Rock You” with britney, pink and beyonce…christ this is bullsh***

That would just completely tarnish the name of Queen. They are done and over with, bringing them back with a singer as horrible as her would destroy a part of rock and roll in itself. Why can’t Brian May accept retirement and realize that they had a good thing and now its over. Led Zeppelin Lost John Bonham and they realized that it as over and their name has never been tarnished. Placing someone like Lady Ga GA in as the front singer would be a horrible idea.
P.S. I would rather hear Gilbert Gottfried fill in for Pavarotti than Lady GA GA for Freddy Mercury.

I’d rather watch the world come to it’s end before this piece of garbage becomes the new lead singer of the best band ever.

In my opinion Gaga is enaugh charistmatic and clever to become Queen’s vocalist (for a while). We used to see Freddie as an icon, monument, almost a saint, but he was scandaluous and controversial. Who, in your opinion, could be more suitable? Someone with wonderful voice only? Sorry. I think Freddie wasl like “Killer Queen” from one of his song . “Dont take me so serious” – he could say. “Rest of my life was just a show” – he wrote. His life was like a theatre, his image was very artificial and he played with it. In this meaning he is more similar to Gaga than to any other artist of our time.

how about getting a “rock singer” – someone with power and range in their voices that could do Queen songs justice! get jeff scott soto in the band or something! i guess deep down, with Queen II being my favorite album of all time, ive always kind of hoped Brian May would go back and do something really ambitious and artistic again

ur all full of crap. im both sides. no one can replace freddie, but lady gaga has been so hugely influenced by him and the other members of queen, that i think she deserves a chance to do something with them.

  16. Raven

If Queen WAS coming back, I would rather see George Michael as their front man than Lady Gaga. Sorry, but have to agree with the others when they say putting her as front vocals for Queen would be tarnishing a legendary band.

  17. fred

    take Gary Mullen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Marty McLean

I love Gaga and Queen almost as much as life itself and I think Gaga has the talent, vocal range and the right character to front for Queen.

However, I still don’t think anyone can replace Freddie.
