Amy Winehouse’s “Like Smoke” & “Our Day Will Come”: Hear The Songs

Amy Winehouse’s upcoming collection of posthumous material, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, is scheduled for a December 5 release. Ahead of that, two tracks have surfaced from it today — a timeless, reggae-tinged cover of Ruby & The Romantics’ “Our Day Will Come”, which can be streamed here, and the Nas collaboration “Like Smoke”, which you can hear below.

Produced by Salaam Remi, a longtime collaborator of both artists, the song finds Amy and Nas trading verses over a warm, shuffling track. Amy’s soulful voice dominates the first verse of “Like Smoke”, while Nas gets an equal amount of time as he raps over the second, in which he appears to reference his split with Kelis (“Like a polygamist, with a twist / Will I marry again? Maybe, I guess.”) You do get the notion that something’s missing from the track — maybe a few more lyrics from Winehouse — which could possibly explain why this has remained unreleased since it was recorded in 2008.

Still, it’s remarkable to hear the voice of the singer, who passed away in July at the age of 27 following a drinking binge, on a somewhat “new” recording.

If anything, “Like Smoke” underscores the fact that Amy Winehouse had the potential to give so much more in the way of musical contributions.
