Are The Black Eyed Peas Replacing Fergie With Ashanti?

The Black Eyed Peas are previously announced that they’re taking a small break, though that “small break” may turn out to be a bit longer than expected for one Pea in particular. The latest rumor is that Fergie has been wanting to go on hiatus so she can focus on starting a family with her husband Josh Duhamel, but that the BEP will carry on with a new female singer — R&B singer Ashanti.

Media Take Out (aka GrainOfSalt.com) reports that Ashanti, who has been touring with the BEP, will be taking Fergie’s spot as the lone female member of the group once she takes her indefinite leave of absence after their last scheduled show of November 23.

“The group had been looking for a replacement for some time,” revealed a “top music industry exec” to the gossip site. There will reportedly be an official announcement in the next few days.

Earlier this week, BEP member Taboo said he and the other members of the Peas respect Fergie’s desire to become a mother. “We have to respect Ferg. Ferg is our sister. She definitely wants to have a family, and we’re happy for her.” He did not, however, mention anything about Ashanti, or having the group continue with a temporary or more permanent singer.

Can the Black Eyed Peas remain as successful without Fergie in the mix? Of course, they formed six years before adding Wild Orchid girl group member Stacy Ferguson to their lineup, but they’ve become a much different group over the years.

Does Ashanti have that Boom Boom Pow? Should the Peas just hold out til Fergie’s ready to return to performing? Or is this rumor as ridiculous as the Black Eyed Peas’ lyrics? Sound off below.
