Given that Jennifer Hudson has had such success lately (and is looking so good), it’s easy to forget that this is the same woman who lost her brother, nephew, and mother (her date to the 2007 Oscars) in an unfathomably tragic murder just a few years ago. Now the trial of J-Hud’s brother-in-law William Balfour, accused of the crimes, is set to begin in February 2012, and Hudson will likely be called as a witness to testify against him. The Disney Parks Christmas performer also revealed in the December/January issue of Ebony that she may have narrowly missed being a victim of the killings herself. Read more below.

In the mag, Hudson says that her fiance David Otunga inadvertently saved her life: “That’s one of the things that saved my life, because I could have been home with my mom then. He wanted me to come out to Florida instead of going to Chicago. I flew out to see him; that’s why I’m still here.”

Well, needless to say, we’re certainly glad for that. And we hope Jennifer gets through the trial with as much ease as possible, given the painful circumstances.
