And so 2011 — arguably the biggest year of Katy Perry’s career — looks like it will end with heartbreak. Russell Brand has filed for divorce, according to TMZ. Documents filed in a Los Angeles court cite “irreconcilable differences”, and its not entirely clear that Perry was expecting the news. The news follows several days of reports that a parting was imminent after the two were seen without their wedding rings, and it comes a little more than a year after they wed in India.

Brand confirmed the split in a statement to the Associated Press, saying: “Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.”

Perry and Brand had appeared to enjoy a mostly fairy-tale romance since they met at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2008. But there had been some indications that their relationship had been under pressure once they approached the altar. Perry told Vanity Fair earlier this year that: “The press is just not your friend when it comes to a marriage. That’s why we didn’t sell the pictures of our wedding, and we got offered millions of dollars for them, millions… it’s the wrong kind of attention. It detracts from the reason why you exist. We wanted that moment to ourselves.”

Now it appears that moment has ended.

Though some had never expected their marriage to last, Brand himself appeared committed to it as recently as a few weeks ago, when he appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show dismissing all the divorce rumors. “I’m married to Katy perpetually. Until death to us part, is the pledge. I’m still alive. This is life. Now.” (He goes on to say that he “really would like” to start a family with Perry).
