The 54th Grammy Awards, a night overshadowed by the death of Whitney Houston, kicked off with a performance by Bruce Springsteen. Right after, LL Cool J — the annual event’s first host in eight years — walked on stage and reminded us of just what a powerful, iconic force Houston was by introducing a clip of her performing “I Will Always Love You” back in 1994. Of course, the show must go on — and indeed it did. Head below to watch the night’s performances, from artists such as Adele, Bruno Mars, Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry and Chris Brown.

See other highlights (Adele’s acceptance speech), lowlights (Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon at the microphone) and more on our Grammy Awards 2012 page.

  2. Sandi

Didn’t see the show, but looking at these performances, I must confer with you D.Scott! One Grammys I probably shouldn’t have missed, lol! Bruno Mars was so channeling James Brown and was totally rocking! He actually made me like “Runaway Baby” more, since it is my least favorite song on his awesome debut album. Adele did not disappoint! She has a beautiful voice! I love Coldplay! Jennifer Hudson is the only woman outside of Dolly Parton and Whitney Houston who can do real justice to ” I Will Always Love You”. Breezy showed himself as a true entertainer on “Beautiful People” and “I Can Only Imagine”. I loved Paul McCartney’s “My Valentine”, Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt’s tribute to Etta James and Jason Aldean & Kelly Clarkson’s “Don’t You Wanna Stay”. Nicki Minaj seemed to me to be the only off note for the night.

my favorite was bruno’s performance he can sing and now he can dance loved the split he did and the carrot part lol I’ll never think of carrot the same after his performance, adele’s performance was ok but not great I think her voice isn’t yet fully recovered, as for jennifer I never liked her voice I know she has a strong one but I think her performance was over the top they should have chosen someone else with a softer tone
