Whatcha Say: Whitney Houston’s Death & Chris Brown Got Our Readers Talking

Idolator Staff | February 17, 2012 5:15 pm

To be honest, folks, this was a hard week to get through. The untimely death of Whitney Houston shook us all, and though The Grammy Awards picked us up a bit, Nicki Minaj’s horrid performance and Chris Brown’s boastful post-Grammy tweets to his “haters” brought us back down again. Then, of course, there were the plagiarism claims of Madonna’s “Give Me All Your Luvin'” that caused one artist in particular to join the heated debate here on Idolator. See what our readers had to say about these hot topics in our weekly comment round-up.

:: The news of Whitney’s passing took many by surprise and led was no different: “I was really shocked when I heard the news about Ms. Whitney Houston’s Death…Her Music will remain forever in my heart and soul…R.I.P. Whitney Houston.”

:: Many, including Pauly, believe that Whitney’s music will live on forever: “In one way or another you music has touched the lives of those who are in the music industry or just your fans in general. May your music live on for a very long time.”

:: Aaron Griffin had similar wonderful things to say: “Your voice touched the very core of my soul, only God can bless people with that kind of talent, and though you struggled towards the end of your life- your existence was not in vain.”

:: Jennifer Hudson put on an emotional performance of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” at the 2012 Grammys and moved many — like our reader Angie: “Jennifer could become the new Whitney. Not to take her Place, but to carry on!”

:: Even though Jennifer’s tribute was not as upbeat as many of other performances of the night, Josh believed hers was the best: “For me it was the highlight. Jennifer, unlike so many other, did the song justice and i think that her voice is underrated.”

:: Beryl remembered back to when Jennifer covered “Over The Rainbow” and praised her for giving an outstanding tribute: “Ms Hudson has a way of making songs her own without mimicking the artists who made the songs great. She did the same with ‘Over The Rainbow’ and ‘And I’m Telling You.'”

:: Joshua came to the defense of Nicki Minaj’s performance of “Roman Holiday” at the Grammys: “It was a good performance of an okay song, it wasn’t great but to think it undermines her ability as an artist so much as to revoke her grammy nominated status is ridiculous. People need to calm down. also whats with the lady gaga references? whenever SHE does anything religious i thought everyone called madonna? why is gaga now the inspiration for such performances?”

:: Bobby, however, kept his review short and not-so-sweet: “Pure, unadulterated, crap.”

:: LYNETTE‘s response to Chris Brown’s lashing out on Twitter is all Team Breezy: “We go through that phase in life that constitutes a second chance, so Chris brown deserves another chance, he must be doing something right because as the song goes LOOK AT ME NOW, the haters are going to hate no matter what he does, so in my opinion chris brown, just keep it moving because the sky is the limit!!!”

:: Kay was not in a forgiving mood : “Chris Brown did wrong. Until he shows that he has changed, I refuse to support him. I don’t hate him. I just think he needs a lot of help. By the industry and the Grammys rewarding him with performance slots and awards, it’s sending Chris Brown the message that his behavior is okay, when it’s not. He still has anger issues. He hasn’t changed one bit.”

:: Boo plans on supporting Madonna even though she has been accused of plagiarism: “These songs sound nothing alike apart from the silly cheerleader chant which has been used millions of times. Stop calling Madonna a theif.”

:: Japes01 took a hit at Lady Miss Kier (of Deee-Lite): “The songs sound nothing alike. And Lady Miss Kier is just mad she spent all her money on Crystal Meth and raving in the 90’s while Madonna was working out and working hard. God bless her but she is no creative genius and clearly bitter at the ‘Other’ lower east side girl’s success.”

:: Little did Japes01 know when he wrote his comment that Lady Miss Kier herself would respond!: “I have never smoked meth, never liked cocaine and have never been out gurning as you say. I speak my mind because i am confident in my knowledge of music. both songs are not well written but I’m tired of mediocre fans of Madonna giving praises to a thief and I’m not the only one saying it.”
