Mariah Carey appeared on Good Morning America this morning, and besides a few cute moments regarding “dem babies”, the conversation remained fairly serious. GMA‘s Robin Roberts began by asking Carey about her thoughts on Whitney Houston’s passing, as the two pop divas had remained friends after collaborating on a duet at the 1999 Oscars. “I’m almost incapable of talking about this still,” said Mariah. The singer also touched on her husband Nick Cannon’s recent health scares, her new gig at Jenny Craig, and the music she’s currently working on. Watch her interview below.

The day of Houston’s death, Mariah Carey tweeted that she was “heartbroken and in tears”, and this morning, she spoke a bit more about their friendship. “It’s very heavy emotionally, especially just looking at that little bit of [footage] of us together, but it was great,” she said. “And I don’t think people could ever understand our relationship. There was always this supposed rivalry in the beginning and then we did the duet and we became friends and I saw her towards the end and I loved her. We all were inspired by her and we all loved her. May she rest in peace and her legend’s gonna go on forever.”

Mariah also discussed her husband’s recent hospitalization and decision to leave his radio show. “Now he is doing better,” she said. “He’s a young, healthy person and it’s about changing the lifestyle. Again, it’s just a lifestyle choice, just an awareness of what can really happen to you no matter how young or in great shape you are.”

Carey is definitely keeping health-conscious lately: she is currently an ambassador/spokesperson for Jenny Craig (a weight-loss plan that helped her drop 30 lbs after her pregnancy), and recently filmed a PSA for the American Heart Association.

As for her own music, Carey — who was spotted hitting the studio with Jermaine Dupri last month — says, “I’m trying to get this song done next week and I’m gonna see if it happens. It just happened and I feel like it’s appropriate for the moment right now.”
