Green Day have been spending a significant amount of time in the studio, working on their follow-up to 2010’s 21st Century Breakdown. And all that hard work is going to create some serious musical overflow, as the pop-rockers are planning to release three separate albums by the end of the year. Tweeted frontman Billie Joe Armstrong: “Ok. Here’s the deal. We’re making a 3 album trilogy. Not 1. Not 2. But 3 albums. Called ¡UNO! ¡DOS! ¡TRE! Coming September November January.” He also included video of himself confirming Green Day’s trio of albums with nothing more than his fingers and purposefully-amateur-looking CGI explosions.

According to a press release, Green Day will release ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré! on September 25, November 13, and January 15, respectively. The trilogy will be produced by the band’s frequent collaborator Rob Cavallo.

Green Day isn’t the first band to release three separate albums within a short period of time — Robyn memorably did the same thing with her three-part Body Talk series in 2010.

After diving into with political themes with sprawling, epic songs on their last two LPs, we’re not surprised the Bay Area band is experimenting with a unique approach to songwriting once again. But more importantly: three Green Day albums by January 2013! YES!
