In the first few years of his career, Chris Brown was mostly known and well liked for his phenomenal dancing and guilt-free pop/R&B tunes, like his debut #1 single “Run It”. It all changed for Brown in 2009, when he assaulted his then-girlfriend Rihanna, and he immediately became a divisive figure, despised by some, and loved by the many who hated those who hated him.

Though the impact of his violent outburst ultimately hasn’t effected his album sales or his career prospects — everyone, including Rihanna, is itching to work with him, and he scored his first #1 album with 2011’s Grammy-winning F.A.M.E. — it seems like ever since, Brown can’t seem to keep away from controversy. Whether it’s how he dealt with the aftermath of the attack, his aggressive blowups on Twitter, or the multitude of other feuds, beefs and questionable situations he’s involved himself in, the “Don’t Wake Me Up” artist has become a magnet for making headlines — and new enemies. Check out a timeline of Chris’s most controversial moments from his career, and let it be known, this is not a complete list.
