Down Under wonder Iggy Azalea broke her silence on the strange, simmering dispute that has found her trading barbs with New York rap sensation Azealia Banks as both artists emerged over the past year. But even with the clarification — which comes as Azalea is preparing, finally, to drop a new EP, Glory — it doesn’t sound like their feud will end anytime soon. What sparked the war of the roses azaleas?

Iggy Azalea, the rising star who’s been working with T.I. (and who didn’t end up signing to Interscope after all), tells DJ Brooklyn Martino that the whole mess began last year at the CMJ music festival in September, when Banks tweeted the first shot. She said, “I’m next level, I had a song about being a Barbie before Nicki Minaj had a song about being a Barbie. Here’s the link to my song. And f**k Iggy Azalea, I had a song called ‘Pussy’ before she ever did. Here’s a link to my song. It’s better.” Azalea fired back, but

But tensions escalated further when the ambitious blonde was named to the “Freshman Class” of new stars by XXL, which featured Iggy and her classmates on its cover. That, she says, prompted Banks to call her out again: Banks, she says, critiqued her lyrics and accused her of being a racist — based on a line from her song “D.R.U.G.S”. (The lyric is “Tire marks, tire marks / Finish line with the fire marks / When the relay starts, I’m a runaway slave / Master”). Azalea later apologized, saying it was “tacky and careless”, and that she was only taking inspiration from Kendrick Lamar‘s song “Look Out For Detox”.

Azalea then responded to Banks, saying: “the best thing you can be is humble, because it’s not about who did it first; it’s about who did it better And then she wrote back to me and said, ‘Beef!’ I was like, not really girl. Not really. It’s not that deep. Sot hen after that, she wrote on Twitter, ‘Fuck white girls. They are privileged and shouldn’t be allowed to rap, because rap is black culture’ and all this other crap. Then, it was like, what does ignorant art even mean anyway? Music is not art. Music is culture. That doesn’t even make any sense. Then, it was quiet until I got on the cover of XXL and it became me being racist.”

Azalea said Glory — which has seen several supposed release dates come and go — is set for mid-June. The EP is to include a collaboration with Mike Posner called “Flash”.
