CMJ Music Marathon 2012: The Jezabels Jolt New York City

Starting with the rise of U2 and continuing today with ColdplayCommonwealth bands seem to have held a monopoly on a specific type of anthemic rock built from mid-tempo melodies, a shimmery wall of guitars and just a touch of gloom. Australia’s The Jezabels follow suit but add soaring vocals to the mix, and if they are the latest torchbearers, then we’re cool with that Anglo tradition continuing.

The band brought their cathartic anthems to New York City’s Webster Hall on October 17 for the second day of the CMJ Music Marathon 2012, delivering a crisp 60-minute set. In the live setting, their songs sounded impressively polished but maintained all the emotion on the thrilling crescendos. This was perhaps best exemplified by “City Girl,” which swelled on a bed of reverb and the siren voice of Hayley Mary, whose vocals filled the entire venue.
