Kelly Clarkson is all smiles nowadays — wouldn’t you be constantly grinning ear-to-ear if you had a new TV gig, a hit album, a new svelte figure and a hot boyfriend to boot?! The pop star keeps up her positive attitude while rocking the cover of the the August issue of Lucky.

In her interview for the mag’s first-ever music issue, the Duets judge talks fashion, style, and confidence, revealing her favorite go-to red carpet look is the bandage dress — “They’re like built-in spanx!” she says. But when she’s just sitting around listening to music, it’s all about jeans. “I put on the Hank Williams and the Patsy Cline and the Rosemary Clooney on vinyl — I’m not trying to be some cool indie-rock person, I just love the way it sounds — and throw on a t-shirt and jeans. In Texas, we practically come out of the womb in jeans.”

Kelly has always been outspoken and steadfast in doing things her own way, creating her own path of pop stardom. “People act like there’s this one set of rules to follow to be a pop star,” she says, “And I think, Well, you say I’m a pop star, so maybe that’s not true… Even though I’m a pop singer, I really have more the life of a country singer.”

She’s definitely found a welcome home in the country genre via her Grammy-nominated duet with Jason Aldean, “Don’t You Wanna Stay”. But there’s an even bigger way Clarkson has truly been welcomed into the country family — her new boyfriend, Brandon Blackstock, just happens to be country legend Reba McEntire‘s step-son.

“It is killing me. I’m trying to write a tough song and it is coming out like butterflies and rainbows,” she recently told People of her new relationship with Blackstock. “People are going to be, like, ‘What the hell happened to you?’ It has been really difficult. I love it. It’s an awesome problem to have.”
