It’s appropriate that Mariah Carey‘s comeback single is called ”Triumphant (Get ‘Em)”, as the pop diva has had quite a winning year. Her adorable twins celebrated their first birthday, she remarried her loving husband Nick Cannon in Parisian style, and she became the highest paid reality show judge in history with her upcoming gig on American Idol. But we’re sure she’s hoping her most noteworthy moment of 2012 comes from her upcoming fourteenth studio album, preceded by the premiere of her feel good single. Listen to the soon-to-be-hit song, which features guest verses by Rick Ross and Meek Mill, below.

“Triumphant (Get ‘Em)” is an empowering midtempo ballad that the songbird wrote when she was going through some tough times. “I wrote TRIUMPHANT when I was going through a difficult time & it helped me get through it,” tweeted Carey about her new song. “When u hear it, pay attention 2 the lyrics #WIN.”

And now that we’re listening, there’s no doubt about it: this is Mariah in full-on inspiration mode, with her vocal melodies displaying more than a hint of ’70s Philly soul influence.

Strangely, Mimi takes a backseat to her two rapper guests for roughly the first two-thirds of “Triumphant”. She finally swoops in for a verse just before the three-minute mark, singing, “So baby when clouds surround you, and everyone seems to doubt you, baby, still know who you are.”

Mimi more than makes up for her absence from the early part of the tune with a cacophony of layered vocals as the song winds down. And, yes, lambs — “Triumph” even boasts classic whistle-register trilling from the diva as it fades out.

  1. Love it! Great track, the lyrics are just wonderful! Very positive start to this new chapter of MC!

  2. Nano

    AMAZING!!!!

  3. Jenny

I have to say i was expecting a lot more from her.. This might be her worst first single.. Besides the chorus which sounds like a bunch of screeching shes has a 5 line verse.they shouldve released something better but IDJ never knows how to choose her singles correctly.. Still hope for the rest of tre album tho.

  4. JimmyK

Not very good. She is desperately hanging on to Hip-Hop and R&B when she hasn’t been successfully executing it for years. She really needs to get with the times and release and upbeat club banger to bring her back to relevance and the charts.

    • Fan4me

i agree with JimmyK. she needs to sell out some more and do more pop songs. no one’s here for her old R&B crap.

    • Jeff

I totally agree with you on this. This is try-hard Honey days. She needs to get more current, her airy voice and these hard rap beats just don’t cut it anymore. I was expecting her to make a comeback, considering how horrible her last album was. I am a HUGE Mariah fan, but lately, it’s been extremely disappointing.

  5. Christopher

I just don’t know about this song. Is this a Rick Ross and Meek Mill song featuring Mariah? I’m slightly confused. Sure, the message from “Triumphant” is great (and kudos for surviving those dark days) but the single lacks that “umph” and magic Mariah is known for, and capable of. The song doesn’t have to be a club banger, i.e. We Belong Together, to catch my attention but “Triumphant” is stale and forgettable. I am a sad LAMB. Like Jenny had said, here is hoping the album will prove me wrong.

  6. Luke

I happen to love, it just needs more mariah

  7. Dustin Farmer

I wish she would get back to her roots. A single that barely even features you? How does that even make sense? I would love some old school “Fantasy” or “Emotions” Mimi… but I won’t hold my breath.

  8. supermariah

    love it..so meaningful

  9. Luke

and this is obviously an artist doing what she loves… She’s knows pop and dance music is the biggest thing out now, but that’s not her deal anymore, we know she’s capable of doing that, just listen to her 2nd Christmas album, the only problem I have with this song is that she sounds like the featured artist

  10. JETTA

I LOVE YOU MARIAH, BUT…..RAPPING IS NOT FOR YOU! YOU’RE BETTER THAN THAT! AS DUSTIN FARMER SAYS: YOU NEED TO GO BACK TO YOUR ROOTS. BESIDES, THEY’RE FEATURING YOU, INSTEAD OF YOU FEATURING THEM! DON’T LIKE IT! WHAT ON EARTH WOULD MAKE YOU COMBINE THESE RAPPERS TO YOUR SONG. IT’S A MESS FOR ME. SORRY…I STILL LOVE YOU, BUT GET BACK TO YOUR EARLY DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYS!
