Alanis Morissette Reveals New Song “Spiral”

After spreading her goodwill as an angelic being in her “Guardian” video, Alanis Morissette gets grounded in self-doubt in the “Spiral”, another track off her forthcoming eighth studio album, Havoc And Bright Lights. Alanis’ spiral spins in a downward direction, but she knows she needs to reach out to others in order to help pull herself out.

“A sense of autonomy is lovely, but forgoing interdependence for some steely independence forgoes the opportunity for intimacy, connection, love and the healing of the planet,” Morissette tells Spinner of her song, and the importance of connecting with other human beings.

Besides being a wife, mother and hugely successful singer-songwriter, Alanis might have another gig on her hands — the Canadian artist is reportedly in talks to join American Idol as a judge. “I’m in talks with somebody right now. I can’t name any names, but I’m pretty excited at the thought of doing it more formally,” she recently told Mix 94.1. “I still have to investigate further, and that’s all I can say.”

Can you picture Alanis and Mariah Carey bonding at the judges’ panel, Mimi revving up the drama and Alanis trying to keep the peace with her ultra-calm demeanor? It’s almost too good to be true, which means it more than likely will never happen, but that won’t stop us from creating Alanis-Mariah fan fiction.

Havoc And Bright Lights drops August 28. You can catch Alanis on tour this fall — head here to see all her tour dates.
