Demi Lovato On ‘The X Factor’: What Can We Expect?

Last week’s MTV Video Music Awards were good to X Factor stars —  and we’re not just talking the three Moonmen past contestants One Direction took home. Demi Lovato, a new judge on the Fox reality competition series, won the first award of the night — Best Video With A Message for 2011’s “Skyscraper”. This means the pop princess now hits prime time with a shiny new VMA statue, not to mention a bona fide hit song, under her belt.

The X Factor returns to Fox this week, and, like all you Lovatics out there, we’re jazzed to see Demi at the judges’ table. Her single “Give Your Heart a Break” is currently ruling Billboard‘s Pop Songs chart, but, from what we’ve seen, we don’t expect her to be giving X Factor hopefuls any sort of break in her critiques. Below is what we do expect from the show’s newest, youngest judge.

She can dish it out — and take it — with Simon:
It looks like Simon Cowell has found his new Paula, albeit a non-slurring, quick-witted version. “I’m a southern girl who speaks her mind,” Demi said recently on Live With Kelly And Michael. While not exactly a southern girl, Simon is clearly similarly outspoken. “We tease each other,” Lovato said on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. Our favorite Demi jab at Simon so far? “You’re going to need to take a breath mint if you get that close to my face.”

A love fest with Brit Brit:
No dueling divas on this show! “Working on this panel is just absolutely incredible, and I never thought I’d be sitting next to Britney Spears for anything in my life, let alone working with her all the time,” the Lovato has said. Please let this love between the pair of new judges translate into a mid-season duet performance!

So many tears:
Lovato called herself “brutally honest,” but her softer side has already shone through in early promos. She’s welled up in auditions, which will likely mean full on waterworks for later eliminations. “I definitely didn’t think it would be this challenging because saying no to people is really hard and emotionally it messes with you a little bit,” she has said. Just make sure your signature eyeliner is waterproof, okay, Demi?

Wise beyond her years:
She may be the youngest judge on the panel, but Demi Lovato has her share of wisdom to dish out to The X Factor‘s contestants. Although only 20, Lovato has already released three successful studio albums and has triumphed through her struggles with bulimia, self-injury and bipolar disorder (chronicled in the MTV documentary Stay Strong). Contestants take heed: Demi Lovato’s “Give Your Heart a Break” is currently #1; this young mentor might just know what she’s talking about.

Style Watch:
Leave the white t-shirts to Simon and the suits to L.A. Reid: Demi is going to step up the style quotient with her ever-changing hair color, sky-high heels, 12 tattoos (and counting) and youthful fashion. We dug the long warrior ponytail that topped off her traffic-stopping Aztec frock at the Teen Choice Awards this summer, and can’t wait for more bold fashion statements to grace The X Factor. Like we need another reason to tune in every week.
