Lady Gaga Launches “Body Revolution 2013,” Shares Her Struggles With Bulimia And Anorexia

Lady Gaga is no stranger to wearing next to nothing while posing for the camera (she built an entire coffee table book with Terry Richardson around it). This time when the pop star did it, however, it was in an effort to free herself from body hatred and begin a healing process — not just for herself, but for anyone suffering from disordered eating. “Bulimia and anorexia since I was 15,” read the first caption of herself in a matching yellow bra and thong. This was followed by, “But today I join the BODY REVOLUTION.”

Gaga’s courageous first step to “inspire bravery and BREED some m$therf*cking COMPASSION” was met with an outpouring of support from her Little Monsters, who filled the comment section of her social networking site with messages of encouragement and even a shared struggle with the singer. Others latched on to the artist’s #bodyrevolution2013 hash tag on Twitter to share their stories. The 26-year-old even created a Body Revolution 2013 page on her Little Monsters site specifically for people to share (and embrace) their “perceived flaws.”

She writes:

My mother and I created the Born This Way Foundation for one reason: to inspire bravery. This profile is an extension of that dream. Be brave and celebrate with us your ‘perceived flaws,’ as society tells us. May we make our flaws famous, and thus redefine the heinous.

This is not the first time Mother Monster has spoken about her battle with bulimia. At a women’s conference earlier this year, the fur-loving diva discussed her eating disorder with fans, but made a point to say that the disease was in her past, sharing, “I used to throw up all the time in high school. So I’m not that confident. And maybe it’s easier for me to talk about it now because I don’t do it anymore.”

The pop star responded to the incredible reaction from fans with a personal note on Monday (September 24).:

I have been startled and overwhelmed with pride and emotion the past few days. Gratitude mostly. Seeing you post photos of things on your bodies and in your minds that you feel society tells you you should be ashamed of. You are showing them you have no shame. You are brave, strong, and accepting not only of yourself, but of others through your experiences. You are proud to be born this way, and brave in your vulnerability with this community. Watching you all create a safe space online for people to be compassionate is the greatest gift you could ever give me. My weight/loss/gain since i was child has tormented me. No amount of help has ever healed my pain about it. But YOU have. My boyfriend prefers me curvier, when i eat and am healthy and not so worried about my looks, I’m happy. Happier then I’ve ever been. i am not going to go on a psycho-spree because of scrutiny. This is who I am. And I am proud at any size. And i love you, and want you to be proud in any form you may take as well. Please don’t look for kindness in critics, go where you know the gold is. Here, in out hearts. Love, Gaga
