Alanis Morissette Covers Green Day’s “Basket Case”: Watch Her On ‘Kimmel’

Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong entered rehab for alcoholism on Tuesday (September 25), so the band was forced to cancel a slew of appearances this week promoting their new album ¡Uno!. One such appearance was a scheduled performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live Tuesday, but Alanis Morissette came to the rescue as a late replacement, and to close out the show she covered the band’s 1994 classic “Basket Case.”

The Canadian singer transformed the punky gem into a piano-based ballad, its slow tempo and her uniquely warbling intonation giving the cheeky lyrics a much bleaker tone. It was undeniably odd to hear the iconic song in such a different light, but it ended up being lovely. Morissette ended by saying “We love you Billie Joe.” Watch the tribute up top.
