M83’s “Steve McQueen” Video: Another Kid With Cosmic Powers

M83 mastermind Anthony Gonzalez has premiered the video for his lush song “Steve McQueen,” and like previous M83 videos, it focuses on a dream-like version of childhood ruled by foggy nights and telekinesis. But this one also features some stop-motion animation.

The clip is the brainchild of French director Balthazar Auxietre and animator Sylvain Derosne, who wanted to depict “the kind of paradoxical energy you have when you grow up,” and was chosen through a fan contest held by M83 in partnership with Genero.tv.

The childhood theme fits, since the nostalgia-inducing synth-pop of “Steve McQueen” feels like one constant, life-affirming wave of guitars and keyboards washing you away to an alternate universe where ’80s music was completely earnest. The single, off 2011’s sprawling Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, is available November 27 and will be packaged with four remixes by AlluxeBeatauCueMAPS and SALM.
