lana del rey cola

Not everyone can taste the difference between Coke and Pepsi. But Lana Del Rey‘s Scottish boyfriend sure can, apparently. The song “Cola” is all about how a certain part of her anatomy tastes like the fizzy soft drink, and not just any cola. But specifically, Pepsi. What a sophisticated palate! Hear more about how this lyric came about after the jump.

“Cola” is inspired by Lana’s boyfriend, Barrie-James O’Neill, of the band Kassidy. “I have a Scottish boyfriend, and that’s just what he says!” Lana said about the lyric, “My pussy tastes like Pepsi Cola.”

When asked if she had any reservations about the track, Lana said:

“Well, I didn’t but everyone around me did. They just thought it was really weird — nothing new here. For me that song was just so cool. Like, the guys I got to play electric guitars… and you know, the amazing surf sounds on it. And I love the way the chorus opens up and has tropical undertones. For me, the vibe of it is so good. I love it.”

Perhaps not surprisingly, Lana reveals she has also been getting a lot of Pepsi-themed fan mail. Though we somewhat doubt Lana will follow in Britney Spears‘ footsteps and be asked to actually endorse the product in an official capacity.

Still, “Cola” is bound to Pepsi’s sales up a bit, right?

  3. “My pussy tastes like Pepsi Cola” is an artistic expression, a hook, to tune the listener in and get their attention. Women are treated like sex objects whose attributes are sold like commodities such as Pepsi Cola and Cherry pie, being bought and sold at all levels as consumables, even in socially accepted roles. Ask why the expression is used, and it might just cause you to listen to the lyrics, which in this case actually have something more to say than the normal song which packages women up as pussy that tastes like Pepsi Cola. I hope this adds perspective to taking a new look, one which goes beyond the programed response culture embeds in your preconceived perception. If not, then you need something more superficial to listen to so you can maintain your prescribed sensitivities that keep you blind to the world you are living in. She beautifully turns a complaint into a wonderfully expressive song that mocks the normalcy and promotion of women in pop music.

  4. Or Perhaps she does have someone who loves her so much as to see her as tasting like Pepsi Cola, which on its own is a deeply personal expression of being loved. I prefer French Onion soup when it is good.

  5. I’m a Coke guy, but would make an exception in her case.
