Following the horrific events in Newtown, CT on December 14, radio stations were quick to yank Ke$ha‘s “Die Young” from rotation, for obvious reasons. Soon after, K$ tweeted that she was “forced” to sing the now-controversial lyrics and initially objected to using them. Lady Dolla today posted a statement on her website addressing the story.

“I was feeling a lot of emotion and sadness when I said I was forced to sing some of the lyrics,” she said. “Forced is not the right word. I did have some concerns about the phrase ‘die young’…especially because so many of my fans are young.” She added: “The point of the song is the importance of living every day to the fullest and staying young at heart.” Read her full statement below.

Ke$ha’s statement on “Die Young” following the Sandy Hook school shooting:

After such a tragic event I was feeling a lot of emotion and sadness when I said I was forced to sing some of the lyrics to Die Young. Forced is not the right word. I did have some concerns about the phrase “die young” in the chorus when we were writing the lyrics especially because so many of my fans are young and that’s one reason why I wrote so many versions of this song. But the point of the song is the importance of living every day to the fullest and staying young at heart, and these are things I truly believe.”
